Ypsilanti, Michigan – The Bowling Green State University swim and dive team broke two schools records on day two of the Mid-American Conference Championships Thursday. The Falcons currently sit in fifth place with 168 points, competing without any divers.
BG had a successful morning of preliminaries, with 15/16 swims resulting in season personal bests. Heading into finals, the Orange and Brown had four swimmers back in the A finals and five back in the B finals. The Falcons were tied for having the most swimmers back this evening (nine).
"We had some very exciting swims tonight but we have a lot of work ahead of us tomorrow morning," head coach Petra Martin said. "We need to put a lot of people in scoring positions tomorrow morning and capitalize on it at night. We are in a catch up position right now so tomorrow morning is crucial for us."
Tara Capouch qualified for the championship final of the 500 freestyle during the morning prelims (by finishing with one of the top eight times), nearly breaking her own school record of 4:52.84. She finished with a time of 4:53.26. Alex Poitinger qualified for the consolation finals (by finishing with one of the next-best eight times) by swimming a career best 4:55.17. She shattered her previous season best by over 10 seconds. In the consolation finals, Poitinger finished in seventh place with a 4:56.75. Capouch placed fifth in the championship final with a time of 4:54.18.
The Falcons set themselves up well in the 200 individual medley as Jordan Bullock and Franziska Wohlert qualified for the A finals, while Stephanie Boyle and Kristin Filby swam their way into the B finals.
Filby was the B heat winner, swimming a season best 2:03.43 and Boyle finished in eighth place with a 2:05.90. In the championship heat, Bullock took eighth place in 2:03.41 and Wohlert placed sixth, breaking the school record with a time of 2:01.83.
In the 50 freestyle, the Falcons qualified one swimmer for the championship final and two more for the consolation final. Victoria Griffin broke her own school in the championship heat, placing third overall and swimming a time of 23.04.
This morning, Kayla Effinger's prelim time tied her for eighth place, which forced a swim off to determine who advanced to the championship heat. She was edged out by Akron in the swim off, but went on to finish second in the consolation finals with a 23.41. Hannah Newman placed eighth with a 23.72.
In the final event of the night, the 200 freestyle relay team finished in third place. Bowling Green's squad of Effinger, Griffin, Wohlert and Newman swam a 1:31.56, which was just six hundredths of a second off of the school record.
BGSU returns to Jones Natatorium tomorrow at 11 a.m. for preliminary swims, and then again at 7 p.m. for the final heats.
