Host Ohio University built a double-digit first-half lead and never let the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team mount a serious comeback bid Saturday afternoon (Feb. 28). With the win, Ohio (23-4, 14-2 MAC) clinched the MAC regular-season championship outright. Kiyanna Black led three double-digit scorers for the Bobcats with 15 points.
Senior Deborah Hoekstra had 13 points, a game-high 12 rebounds and two blocked shots to lead the Falcons (9-18, 2-14 MAC) in all three categories. The double-double was Hoekstra's fifth of the season, with all five coming against conference foes.
BGSU went 8-of-21 from three-point range, with six different Falcons hitting at least one long-range shot apiece. Sophomore Rachel Konieczki and freshman Haley Puk each made two shots from beyond the arc.
Puk and junior Miriam Justinger scored nine points apiece, while Konieczki had eight points for the Brown and Orange.
For the Bobcats, Quiera Lampkins and Lexie Baldwin joined Black in double figures in the scoring column. Lampkins had 14 points and a team-leading nine rebounds, going 6-for-8 from the field. Baldwin scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
The Falcons spotted the hosts an early 5-0 lead, but Hoekstra drove down the lane and hit a layup, and Justinger's drive resulted in a short banker from the right side.
Baldwin put back a teammate's miss, but redshirt freshman Kennedy Kirkpatrick drove and kicked the ball to freshman Rachel Myers for a three-pointer that tied the game at 7-7 with just under four minutes gone.
Out of the day's first media timeout, Konieczki split a pair of free throws, and BG had a one-point lead. But, after Ohio's Yamonie Jenkins nearly threw the ball away, it bounced to Black, who knocked down a three-pointer to give the 'Cats a 10-8 lead, and a Hannah Boesinger triple put the hosts ahead by five. Ohio went 10-for-26 from long distance on the afternoon.
Konieczki came right back with a three-point make from the left wing, but the home team proceeded to go on a 9-0 run, with three layups followed by a Mariah Byard trey at the 9:28 mark. Justinger answered with a nifty driving layup, but Black's triple gave Ohio a 25-13 lead.
A handoff play resulted in Hoekstra drawing a foul inside, and the senior knocked down two tosses from the stripe. Lampkins hit a layup, but Justinger hit a straightway three to cut the Ohio lead to 27-18. The hosts, however, then scored the next nine points, opening up a 36-18 advantage on a Baldwin layup with just over two minutes left in the half.
Hoekstra ended that Ohio run with a layup, and Konieczki passed the ball to Justinger, got it back and knocked down a triple in the last minute of the half. The Bobcats led, 36-23, at the intermission.
Lampkins scored on Ohio's first possession of the second half, but Hoekstra drove inside and whipped the ball to Kirkpatrick for a three-point bucket from the left side. Moments later, Puk found Hoekstra for a triple that just beat the shot-clock buzzer. The Falcons trailed by 11, 40-29.
BG got a stop on the next Ohio possession, but the Falcons could not get a layup to drop, and the hosts took a 14-point lead as Lampkins hit a corner three with 16:09 to go.
The 'Cats converted a layup before the Falcons got five-straight points, as Hoekstra hit two more free throws and Puk knocked down a three-point try from out top. Ohio's lead was down to 10, 45-35, but Byard answered with a three-ball for a 13-point advantage.
Puk's entry pass resulted in a layup for freshman Sarah Baer, and Hoekstra's smooth floater from the right side cut the Falcons' deficit to single digits, 48-37, with 11:29 remaining.
But, the Bobcats restored their double-digit lead with a Kat Yelle layup, and a dubious foul call gave the ball back to the hosts. Baldwin's 'and-1' layup gave Ohio a 54-39 lead with just under nine minutes left.
Puk split a pair of free throws, and a Justinger layup with 6:56 on the clock cut Ohio's lead to 56-42, but Black and Baldwin hit triples to put the home team ahead by 20. Puk scored five more points in the late going, but the hosts maintained their lead.
Ohio shot 43.9 percent from the field on the afternoon, while the Falcons shot 32.6% from the floor. Ohio had a 37-31 advantage on the boards, with 10 offensive rebounds leading to 11 second-chance points.
The Falcons will end the regular season with a pair of home games, beginning with a Wednesday night (March 4) game vs. Buffalo. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m. on Kate Achter Bobblehead Night at the Stroh Center, with the first 500 fans through the gates receiving a much shorter likeness of the former Falcon great.
