BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University gymnastics team recorded its eighth-best score (195.200) in program history Friday (Feb. 6) night in front of a packed and energetic crowd at Anderson Arena against Ohio State. The Buckeyes won the dual meet by posting a 195.650. The Falcons are now 3-4 on the season, while Ohio State improves to 3-2.
Â
The Falcons set season highs on both floor and beam by registering a 48.925 and 48.875, respectively. Bowling Green also tied its season high on vault with a 48.850, and scored its second-best mark on the year on bars by earning a 48.550.
Â
Individually, 10 new season highs were set and six new career highs were established. Additionally, five routine scores tied individual season highs, while three routine scores tied individual career highs.
Â
"I think they did much better. We came out strong on vault, and that really got the momentum going," head coach Kerrie Turner said. "I think where we made the most progress was uneven bars. That's something that has kind of been a little bit of a curse throughout the last couple of meets, and it was really exciting to see us put it together. It wasn't perfect, but it was an improvement. And we were able to take that, and really finish strong on beam and floor. But I'm just proud of the mentality – I gave them a pretty tough talk last night and told them I had really high expectations, and they seemed to step up to it and not shy away from it."
Â
Freshman Laura Mitchell and senior Amanda Lievendag tied for the bars title by scoring a 9.825 each. Mitchell has now earned a share of first place on an apparatus in three straight meets, as she won beam at Eastern Michigan on Jan. 24 and at George Washington on Feb. 1. Junior Alyssa Nocella – who scored a 9.725 on bars, 9.775 on vault, 9.825 on beam, and a 9.850 on floor – won the all-around with a 39.175. Nocella's all-around score was also a season high. The junior's bars, beam and floor scores were season bests, as well.
Â
Lauren Feely – who tied career high on floor by scoring a 9.750 – placed third on vault by earning a season-high 9.825. Nocella and Mitchell tied for second on beam by recording a 9.825 each, and senior Gina Locigno and Nocella tied for second on floor with a 9.850. Locigno's 9.850 established a new season high.
Â
Freshman McKenna Schoenberger – who made her collegiate debut last Sunday at George Washington – topped her 9.650 on floor by scoring a 9.700. Freshman Morgan Denlinger made her collegiate debut on bars, and scored a 9.500. Junior Katrina Carpenter tied a career high on vault with a 9.650, and junior Caroline Ellingboe tied a career best and placed fourth on beam by registering a 9.800.
Â
Senior Jamilah Ali placed tied for fourth with Nocella on vault with a 9.775, while freshman Jordan Rae's 9.775 on beam – which set a career high – placed her seventh on the apparatus. Victoria Heath also had a career day. The sophomore set career highs on both beam (9.650) and floor (9.775), while tying a season best on vault with a 9.725.
