Bowling Green, Ohio – After a month since teeing off its 2015 spring season in Florida, the Bowling Green State University women's golf team will return to the links for competition this week at the 2015 Rio Verde Invitational from March 13-15 in Rio Verde, Arizona.
Hosted by Western Michigan University at the par 72, 6,215-yards White Wing Golf Course at the Rio Verde Country Club, the 18-team tournament field includes Missouri State, Northern Arizona, Northern Illinois, Ball State, Akron, Ohio, Bowling Green, Toledo, Eastern Michigan, University of Arkansas - Little Rock, University of Missouri - Kansas City, Seton Hall, Bradley, Xavier, Illinois State, Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, Wichita State and host Western Michigan.
The three-day event will consist of 18 holes of play each day – Friday, Saturday and Sunday – with the four lowest scores each day accounting for the team round score for the 54-hole tournament.
Head Coach Stephanie Young will send out an experienced lineup for the Falcons in Patricia Holt, Shelby Wilson, Hannah Lewis, Fran Rodriguez and Lily Bartell.
Holt, who was named the MAC Women's Golfer of the Week of on Feb. 12, is coming off the Women's Mid-American Match Play Challenge event in which she went 3-0-0 over the two days of play. The senior posted wins over Pader Her of Akron, Karyn Lee Ping of Eastern Michigan and Julia Champion of Western Michigan. At last year's Rio Verde event, Holt finished with rounds of 80, 80, and 74 to finish with a 54-hole combined score of 234, +21, and in a tie for 37th-place overall.
Wilson will help to anchor the BGSU lineup, as the senior went 2-1-0 overall last time out at the match play event one month ago with victories over Frida Fougberg of Akron and Kaityln Watkins of Western Michigan. The Texas native, who posted a BGSU low stroke average of 77.36 for the Falcons in the fall season, finished in a tie for 33rd at last year's tournament with rounds of 78, 79, 76, and a three-round combined score of 233, +20.
Like Wilson, BGSU's Lewis also went 2-1-0 overall at the match play event in Florida back in February, and will look to continue to build on a solid fall season. The junior, who carded a low round 72 twice over the fall slate, turned in a 54-hole combined score of 236, +23, with rounds of 80, 81, and 75, to place in a tie for 45th-place last spring at the 2014 Rio Verde Invitational.
Competing in her first Rio Verde Invitational, Rodriguez is coming away from the Women's Mid-American Match Play Challenge with two wins on the second day of play versus Kylie Raines of Eastern Michigan and Laura Moutrey of Western Michigan. The sophomore has played in six straight events for the Falcons dating back to the fall season and has continued to improve each time out.
Like Holt, Bartell posted a perfect 3-0-0 mark at the match play event to tee-off the spring season with wins over Lesli Stolly of Akron, Taylor Ellett of Northern Illinois and Jessica McRae of Ohio. At last year's Rio Verde Invitational, Bartell paced the Falcons with a 28th-place finish. She carded rounds of 73, 85 and 74 to finish with a 54-hole score of 232, +19.
Overall as a team, the Falcons finished ninth out of the 18-team field in last year's event with a combined team score of 926, +74. However, the Falcons wrapped up their three rounds of play last spring with a team-low round of 299, +15, on the final day of play.
