Lewis Leads Falcons on Day One of Rio Verde Invitational

Rio Verde, Arizona – The Bowling Green State University women's golf team returned to competition for the first time in over a month on Friday, as junior Hannah Lewis paced the Falcons who turned in a first round team score of 311, +23, on day one of the 2015 Rio Verde Invitational hosted by Western Michigan at the par 72, 6,215-yards White Wing Golf Course at the Rio Verde Country Club in Rio Verde, Arizona.
With the Falcons opening round of 311, +23, BGSU sits in 15th-place overall in the 18-team field in front of Akron, Ball State and Texas A&M – Corpus Christi.
"We did not finish our rounds well today, but there are only nine shots separating us from inside the top-five," commented head coach Stephanie Young. "There are two days left and we intend to come out and play hard tomorrow morning."
Lewis paced the Falcons with a first round 74, +2, on Friday. The junior posted one birdie and 14 pars on the opening day of play, including shooting an even par 37 on the back nine, to end day one in a tie for 13th-place overall. Her 14 pars were tied for the second most on the day.
Behind Lewis for the Falcons were seniors Shelby Wilson and Patricia Holt. Wilson carded a first round 78, +6, to place in a tie for 48th overall, while Holt was just one stroke behind Wilson with a 79, +7, to put her in a tie at 59th-place after day one of play. Both Wilson and Holt finished the first round of play with two birdies and nine pars, respectively.
Rounding out the lineup for BGSU was Lily Bartell and Fran Rodriguez. Bartell posted a first round 80, +8, by way of one birdie and nine pars, while Rodriguez ended Friday's round of play with a round of 83, +11, which included one par and seven birdies over her first 18 holes of play. Bartell is in a tie for 70th-place overall, while Rodriguez will enter Saturday's second round in a tie for 85th-place.
Seton Hall leads after one day of play with a combined team score of 296, +8, while Ohio sits in second-place with a team score of 299, +11.
The three-day event will continue with the second round of play on Saturday, March 14.
