Live Stats for Friday's Akron Match
The Falcons opened the MAC schedule last weekend, falling by a narrow 4-3 final against Northern Illinois University on Friday (March 20) at Keefe Courts, then dropping a 6-1 decision to Western Michigan University two days later at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.
On Friday, three Falcons – sophomores Harley Hutchison and Brittany Plaszewski and freshman Emily Witt – each picked up singles victories against NIU. Hutchison downed her Huskie opponent in straight sets at the second flight, and Plaszewski and Witt each captured a 10-point tiebreaker after splitting the first two sets, with Witt playing at the third flight and Plaszewski at the fourth.
Freshman Megan Miller earned BG's point on Sunday vs. WMU, winning in straight sets at the number-one flight. Miller leads the Falcons with seven singles wins and 14 overall victories in her first collegiate season.
Miller has played at the top singles flight in each of the three matches in the month of March to date. Hutchison has played at the second flight, with Witt and Plaszewski at the third and fourth flights, respectively, during that time.
Sophomore Antonina Farrar was in action at the fifth flight, while freshman Sydney Seeley was in the lineup at the sixth flight during both of last weekend's matches.
Elkin and assistant coach Stephanie Dalmacio have been able to field a complete six-player lineup for both singles and doubles in each of the March duals. BGSU, ravaged by injuries all season long, had just five players in the lineup at Michigan State on Feb. 21, and only four players travelled to IPFW for the team's Feb. 27 match vs. the Mastodons.
Only Farrar and Witt have been in the singles lineup for all 11 dual matches to date, and only Witt has been in both the singles and doubles lineups in every spring match.
Akron enters the weekend with an overall record of 8-8, and the Zips are 0-2 in MAC play to date. UA's last three matches all have ended in 4-3 results, as the Zips lost to Eastern Michigan and Toledo last weekend, before snapping a four-match losing streak with a win at Milwaukee Tuesday (March 24). Akron is 4-4 in home matches, 3-3 in road matches and 1-1 in neutral-site contests to date. Last season, the Zips of head coach Brandon Padgett finished with records of 10-15 overall and 0-8 in MAC action. Akron was predicted to finish seventh in the MAC in 2015 by the league's head coaches, according to the preseason poll.
Buffalo is 5-7 on the year, and the Bulls are 1-1 in MAC action heading into Friday's (March 27) home match vs. Miami. Last weekend, UB lost a 5-2 decision at UT, then broke a three-match losing streak with a 5-2 victory over EMU. The Bulls are 4-2 at home, 1-4 on the road and 0-1 in neutral-site matches this spring to date. Last year, head coach Kristen Ortman Maines and the Bulls finished 15-6 overall and placed fourth in the MAC with a 5-3 league ledger. UB was tabbed to finish sixth in the league this spring by the MAC's head coaches.
The Falcons lead Akron, 28-7, in the all-time series between the teams, and BGSU has captured the last three matches. Last season, BG – playing a home outdoor dual match for the first time in two years – posted a 6-1 win over the Zips at Keefe Courts (April 11, 2014). Two years ago, BG won a pair of matches, including a 4-3 win in the Falcons' last road match vs. the Zips (Apr. 5, 2013). That win snapped a five-match UA series winning streak. The Brown and Orange went on to post a 4-2 win in the semifinal round of the MAC Championships that season (Apr. 27, 2013). BGSU won 16-straight matches vs. the Zips, from 1994 through 2008, before the Zips won the next five duals prior to BG's current three-match series win streak.
The Falcons lead Buffalo, 14-4, in that series, and BG has won three of the last four meetings. Last year, the Brown and Orange topped UB by a 5-2 score on Senior Day at Keefe Courts (April 12, 2014). Two years ago, in BG's last trip to Buffalo, but Bulls downed the Falcons by a 5-2 score (April 6, 2013) to snap BG's two-match series win streak. BGSU won the first nine series meetings, and the teams then split the next eight matchups before BG's win last season.
Only two players on the 2014-15 BGSU roster, Hutchison and junior Drew Fillis, saw action in last year's UA and UB matches. Fillis played at the fifth singles and top doubles flights in each of those duals. After playing a pair of doubles matches in this year's opening tournament (Sept. 12-13 at Miami), Fillis has missed the rest of the season to date due to injury. Hutchison played at the sixth singles and third doubles flights vs. both the Zips and Bulls last spring.
Following this weekend's matches, the Falcons will return home for the next two contests, beginning with a matchup against the University of Toledo on Friday, April 3. BGSU will host Miami the following weekend (April 11), before ending the regular season with matches at Ball State (April 17) and Eastern Michigan (April 19).
