BUIES CREEK, N.C.—The Bowling Green State University baseball team dropped Sunday's series finale to Campbell at Jim Perry Stadium, 4-2. With the loss, the Falcons drop their overall season record to 3-6 and will next compete on Tuesday in Russmatt Invitational play in Winter Haven, Fla.
"We are looking forward to getting back out on the field down in Florida," head coach Danny Schmitz said. "As a team we have a lot to work on this week before we come home to begin Mid-American Conference play the following week."
True freshman Zac Carey pitched well in his third career start, as he went a career-high 5.0 innings in the game. Despite picking up the loss, Carey allowed just two earned runs while striking out two. He surrendered just five hits and a walk in the game.
Carey worked out of a first inning jam, as Campbell leadoff hitter Cedric Mullins started things off with a bunt single. After he advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt, Carey worked out of the jam with two straight groundouts to end the inning.
For the third consecutive day, the Falcons struggled to take advantage of opportunities in Sunday's loss. In the top of the third inning, Nick Glanzman got things started with a double off the wall in left field. He was stranded at second, though, as Campbell's pitching staff cracked down to get two strikeouts—both looking—to end the inning.
The Camels took advantage of three hits in the bottom half of the third inning to grab an early 2-0 lead. The inning began with an infield single, as Greg Basalyga made a valiant diving effort on a sharply hit ball down the line, but his throw to first was just late. A Mullins double put two Camels in scoring position with just one out. Both runners came home on a single up the middle, but a double play ended the inning.
Bowling Green was able to cut into the 2-0 deficit in the top of the fifth inning, as Basalyga and Randy Righter singled to begin the frame. Glanzman, the next batter, brought home Basalyga on an RBI fielder's choice, cutting the Campbell lead to 2-1.
Campbell added an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth inning, but once again Carey pitched through most of the trouble to minimize the damage.
Addison Rospert started a two-out rally for the Falcons in the top of the sixth with a single through the left side of the infield. After advancing to second base on a wild pitch, Rospert would score on a Keegan RBI single to left field to make the score 3-2.
Devin Daugherty came into the game in the bottom of the sixth, relieving Carey on the mound. He was greeted rudely by Cole Hallum for Campbell, who hit his second home run in as many days to extend the Camels' lead to 4-2. Daugherty set down CU in order from there the rest of the inning.
Jason Link was strong in relief on Sunday afternoon, shutting down the Camels in his two innings of work. He struck out four batters, including striking out the side in the bottom of the eighth—all on breaking balls looking.
Bowling Green gets back on the field Tuesday morning in Winter Haven, Fla. to begin play at the Russmatt Invitational. The Falcons will play five games from March 10-14, including two on Tuesday. The day's first game against Bucknell begins at 10:00 a.m., while the second game against Butler is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. first pitch. Both games will be played at Chain O'Lakes Stadium, the former spring training home of the Cleveland Indians.
