Off The Court: Katie Scholten

Throughout the spring, BGSUFalcons.com will help you to get to know the student-athletes on the BGSU Volleyball team better. After graduating just two seniors from the 2014 Falcons and having none in 2015, the team has a strong foundation for success in the near future. This week's featured player is sophomore-to-be Katie Scholten. Despite injury, Scholten played in 20 matches, starting four times, as a freshman in the fall. She had 114 digs and 12 aces, posting a season-best 17 digs in a match against Miami.

Besides volleyball and school, most of my time is spent …
with my teammates, as well as my friends I've made from class and the dorms.

One hidden talent that I have is …
I can play the piano. I have played for about 11-12 years now, it's one of my favorite things to do when I am home.

Three things I would take with me to a deserted island …
I would most likely bring some form of music whether it was a boom box or an iPod, a really good book, and sunscreen because otherwise I would burn very badly.

One destination in the world for a vacation that I have never visited before but would like to …
Ireland; I have a lot of family originally from there and I would love to go and visit and just see what it's like.

Something everyone likes that I just don't understand …
I just don't understand why people like movies. I am horrible when it comes to the list of movies I have seen and I occasionally get a hard time from my teammates because they LOVE movies.

One random fact about me is …
My favorite sport after volleyball would either be swimming or fencing because I swam for eight years and I fenced for 1-2 years.

What skill I want to get better at (non-volleyball) …
I want to get better with photography. I took photography throughout high school and even did an independent study my senior year. I would love to become better with film photography and taking a good clean photograph.

The best feeling in volleyball is …
either getting a block or setting up your hitter for a major kill. There is nothing better then that.

I started playing volleyball when I was …
in fourth grade because it was a sport I was always drawn to and I fell in love with it instantly.

The part of my game I want to improve the most before the fall season is …
putting my hitters in the best position possible when I am out of system, so they can still get a kill.

My favorite class at BGSU is …
Honors Critical Thinking class because it is debate and discussion-based and it is interesting to hear others views and thoughts on topics.

I chose to come to BGSU because …
when I came to visit, BG had the Midwest feel that I was looking for, that was very important for me. In addition I felt the team and the coaching staff was the best fit for me when I came to visit. It wasn't like any other school I had visited.

The best advice about being a BGSU volleyball player that I received from a teammate and/or coach thus far is….
don't be afraid to get out of your comfort zone and look silly. By getting out of our comfort zone we are able to accomplish things we didn't think could before. And when we are learning something new we will look silly when we first start out, but that's okay because it's part of the process.

An essential part of my pregame routine is …
I always put my left knee pad and shoe on before I put on my right one on, it's some superstition I have with game days.

My pre-game "must listen to" musical artist is…
some song by Imagine Dragons, I don't have one song I always listen to.

My dream job is …
a pediatric physicians assistant, I am very interested in the medical field and I've always wanted to work with children so it is the best of both worlds.

to read minds, I am always curious about what others are thinking.

If I could have dinner with any famous person dead or alive, it would be….
Ed Sherran, I am a huge fan of his music and would really enjoy the chance to sit down and have a conversation with him.

Courtney Thompson, she is the setter for the USA Olympic team.

my sister because she has made her dream a reality and is doing what she loves at any cost.

When God wants to gives you a gift, he wraps it in a problem, the bigger the gift the bigger the problem. But if we ignore the problem we will never see the gift. – This is something my mother has always said to me and it has stuck with me.
