Muncie, Ind. – Junior Alicia Arnold qualified for the finals in two events and sophomore Makenzie Wheat and redshirt junior Andrea Alt added to Bowling Green's point total on day two of the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships Friday, hosted by Ball State.
Â
Bowling Green sits in seventh place after day two of the league championships with 17 points. The Falcons are currently five points behind Central Michigan to break into the top half of the conference standings for the first time since 1999. The Falcons ended seventh a year ago.
Â
Wheat posted the big performance of the day for the Falcons and it came when it looked the bleakest. After fouling on her first two throws in the shot put, she was down to her final chance to make the finals and score points for Bowling Green. Wheat came up with a personal best throw of 51-feet-2.25 and earned a fifth place finish. It marked a three-spot improvement from a year ago when she placed eighth as a freshman. It was also the third-best shot put outing in BGSU history and moves her closer to Kerri McClung's school record of 52-8.25 in 2005.
Â
While much of day two was centered around preliminary heats for finals, Bowling Green also picked up a point from Alt in the steeplechase. In blistering heat, she ran 11:08.56 to earn a spot on the podium for the third consecutive year.
Â
In prelim heats, Arnold qualified for finals in both the 100 and 200. She placed third in the 100 with a time of 11.69 seconds, good for a personal best and moving her into third place in school history. She also ran 24.04 seconds in the 200, the fifth-fastest of the preliminary heats, to set another PR and qualify for finals.
Â
Redshirt senior Brittany Sinclair blazed a new personal best in the 400, making the finals with the second-fastest time of the day in 54.91 seconds. It was the seventh-fastest 400 race in BGSU history. Teammate Taylor Rambo, a redshirt sophomore, was fifth in a personal best time of 55.23, the No. 10 time in program history.
Â
In a bit of a surprise, redshirt junior Maria Meredith posted a time of 4:41.88 in the 1500 to grab the 12th and final spot to the finals in that event. She entered the meet seeded 15th but climbed three spots to earn another race Saturday.
Â
A handful of Falcons set new personal bests despite missing out on berths to the finals. Freshman Dorresha Green missed finals by one spot in the 100 with a new best time of 11.95 seconds, while junior Kera Lamotte set two new personal bests. In the 100, she ran 12.22 seconds and in the 200, she missed the finals by one spot with a time of 24.54 seconds. Junior Demetra Taylor added her fastest time ever in the 100 hurdles at 14.31 seconds to place 12th after entering as the No. 13 seed.
Â
"We had a lot of positives today, highlighted by Makenzie Wheat in the shot put," BGSU head coach Lou Snelling said. "But, we also missed some opportunities the team really needed. How we react to that tomorrow and how we take advantage of the opportunities we do have will say a lot about our character as a team."
Â
Bowling Green will close out the MAC Championships Saturday by competing 15 times in 10 events. Among the competitions will be the 400 relay in which the Falcons enter as the No. 2 seed. The day begins with junior Tiera Parker and freshman Kyla Paster in the triple jump at 10:30 am.
