Columbus, Ohio – Two school records tumbled as the Bowling Green State University track and field team made a strong charge towards the postseason at the Jesse Owens Track Classic, hosted by Ohio State University.
The 400 relay team of Brittany Sinclair, Alicia Arnold, Kera Lamotte and Dorresha Green decimated the previous school record of 46.17 seconds by almost a full half second with a time of 45.72 seconds. The Falcons were the fastest of four MAC teams at the event and were only defeated by Ohio State, Notre Dame and Michigan State. Sinclair, in fact, was part of the previous school record relay team when she ran alongside Jeanette Pettigrew, Felicia Jefferson and Allison Weimer to establish the mark at the MAC Championships in 2013.
records in the hammer throw.
Along with those two results, the Falcons set numerous personal bests and climbed up the MAC leaderboards in numerous events.
Arnold not only helped the 400 relay team to a school record but she hit a MAC automatic qualifying mark in the long jump with a season-best leap of 19-feet-4. It moves her into second in the conference this year. Raven Porter added a jump of 18-4.25 and Kyla Paster set a new personal best at 17-2.75.
In the 400, Taylor Rambo crushed her previous best time of 56.51 seconds, which she set at the 2013 MAC Championships, by racing to a 55.92. It moves her into eighth place in the MAC this year and puts her in 10th in BGSU history in the event.
Makenzie Wheat continues to build consistency in the shot put, throwing 50-3.5 to place third overall. It was the fifth-best performance in program history. Kayla Velasquez won the open flight of the hammer throw, joining Pleger's win in the championship flight of the event, by throwing a career-best 182-feet. She moves into eighth place in school history with the toss.
Dorresha Green set a personal best in the 100 at 12.41 seconds and Demetra Taylor posted a season-best time of 14.44 seconds in the 100 hurdles, the fastest time for a Falcon this year. Kera Lamotte was the top BGSU finisher in the 200 at 24.71 seconds but Brittany Sinclair (24.78 seconds) and Gabrielle Edwards (25.15 seconds) set personal bests in the event as well. Connor Kempf had a season-best time in the 400 hurdles at 1:04.34 and the 1600 relay team of Rambo, Edwards, Cortisha Short and Sinclair ran 3:46.84 to break into the top 10 relay teams in BGSU history in eighth place.
"We needed to take some steps this weekend if we wanted to accomplish our goals at the MAC Championships," BGSU head coach Lou Snelling said. "The girls absolutely did that, bringing home two school records along the way. Now we have to maintain focus and finish preparations for our most important meet of the season."
BGSU has one weekend remaining before the MAC Championships, hosted by Ball State. The Falcons will compete at the Toledo Invitational Thursday and Friday. The MAC Championships will then begin on Thursday, May 14 and will last three days.
