BGSU returns home to prepare for Tuesday's MSU match
The University of Dayton took a two-goal lead into the halftime break, then scored early in the second half en route to a 6-0 win over the Bowling Green State University men's soccer team Wednesday night (Sept. 23). The non-conference game was held at Baujan Field on the UD campus.
With the win, the Flyers improve to 5-3-1 on the season. The Falcons drop to 6-2-0 heading into a home game vs. Michigan State University next Tuesday (Sept. 29).

"Believe it or not, we did some good things in this game," said BGSU head coach Eric Nichols. "I was really pleased with the first half, but I was also quite impressed with how well Dayton did with their few chances in that half. They had a couple really good moments that stung us, but even at halftime, I fully believed that we could get something back.
"We couldn't catch a break there early in the second half, and they stung us again, and then the game got out of hand."
Maik Schoonderwoerd had a pair of goals for the Flyers, while Kissima Bojang, Amass Amankona, Michael Frasca and Anthony Keene also scored for the home side.
The Falcons had 10 corner kicks on the night, including nine in the first half. BGSU had a 9-6 advantage in shot attempts in that opening period, and the Brown and Orange took 15 shots in the game. But, BG could put just three of those shots on goal, and UD 'keeper Justin Saliba was able to save all three.
Redshirt junior Max Auden won a corner before the game was 15 seconds old, and that corner, taken by junior Jacob Roth, was knocked out of play for another BG corner. The Flyers dealt with that ball, however, and cleared it out of danger.
In the fifth minute, senior Ryan James worked the ball upfield and played a long ball in the direction of Auden, but the play was whistled down due to an offside call.
The Flyers had a chance with roughly 12 minutes gone, but Roth blocked a shot in the box by Schoonderwoerd. But, moments later, Schoonderwoerd and the hosts were on the scoreboard. UD scored off of a nifty play which saw Andrew Lightner play a low entry ball to Tommy Harr on the left side of the penalty area. Harr slid a square pass to Schoonderwoerd, who hit a one-timer that found the far-side netting. With just over 13 minutes elapsed, the Flyers had the lead.
Several minutes after the goal, a long ball by Roth was poorly played by UD's center back. Redshirt freshman Bismark Agyeman picked up the loose ball on the right side of the penalty area and fired a shot, but it was blocked at the near post.
BGSU won a corner kick in the 19th minute, and senior Jake Genrich got a head on Roth's centering ball, but the ball was blocked by a defender in the box.
The Falcons won the ball back, and Auden found junior Joe Sullivan in traffic. Sullivan quickly played a ball to the onrushing Pat Flynn, but the pass was just out of Flynn's reach, and Saliba was able to gather it in.
An entry ball by the Falcons was blocked by a UD defender, but his clearance was poor and the ball went to Auden on the left side of the 18-yard box. Auden fired quickly, but his shot was just wide of the far post.
In the 24th minute, the Flyers doubled the lead as Bojang fired a shot from distance that found the upper half of the net. The two-goal deficit was BGSU's first of the season.
As the match approached the half-hour mark, a long free kick by Roth went over the heads of everyone in the penalty area, and nearly went in, but Saliba knocked the ball away from the left post at the last second. Moments later, a Roth corner kick very nearly found the head of sophomore Alexis Souahy, but the Flyers cleared the corner out of their defensive end.
One of BG's best chances of the night came with just under 11 minutes left in the half. Souahy played a cross into the box from the left side, and Sullivan, facing away from goal, nodded the ball on frame with a leaping effort. The UD 'keeper, however, was able to make an acrobatic save.
Auden fired back-to-back shots in the 36th minute, with the first coming from six yards out after a corner, and the second a blast from distance. But, the first shot was blocked and the other went wide of the goal. The Flyers took that two-goal lead into the intermission.
Early in the second period, some nice work by Brad Macomber in front of the BG bench resulted in the sophomore being fouled. Roth's ensuing free kick sailed into the box, where Souahy was running with a Dayton defender on each side of him. The ball struck the arm of one of those three players, and a foul was whistled on the Falcons as several BG players voiced their displeasure with the call. Just over two minutes later, the Flyers extended the lead to three goals.
UD's goal came after a corner kick was headed high into the air by Amankona, UD's leading scorer. That corner came after BGSU goalkeeper Ryan Heuton made a nice diving save on a shot by Harr. On the header after that corner kick, however, the ball somehow found the goal, crossing the line just under the crossbar on the left side.
Frasca gave UD a 4-0 lead in the 61st minute, after a combination play with Schoonderwoerd in the box. Frasca actually appeared to mis-hit his shot, but the ball rolled into the left corner of the goal.
Midway through the period, the Falcons had a flurry of shots off of a throw-in on the left side. But, shots by Suliivan and James were blocked, and a follow try by freshman Tate Robertson went wide.
With 17 minutes to go, Heuton made a nifty diving save on Amankona as he looked to go far post with a shot. Heuton's ensuing punt found Flynn, who quickly put a ball ahead to Sullivan as BG looked to counter. Sullivan's pass found Auden running into the box, but the redshirt junior went down as he approached the six-yard line.
Schoonderwoerd scored his second goal of the night with just over 15 minutes to go. Amankona's cross was blocked by a BG defender with a diving header. The ball, however, went directly to Schoonderwoerd, who fired it into the net.
Then, with just under 10 minutes left, Keene capped the scoring, receiving a long ball from Carlos Sendin and hitting a turnaround shot.
With just over a minute to go, a BG crossing ball got through the box to freshman Ryan Ross on the far side of the goal, but his shot was saved, and a Falcon shot after the ensuing corner kick went wide of the net.
The Flyers had a narrow 17-15 advantage in shots on the night, including an 11-6 edge in the second half. BGSU had a 10-5 advantage in corner kicks, with nine in the first half.
"This is just one loss," said Nichols. "It is certainly not a good result, but it is just one game. We will review this game, learn from it and get better as we get ready for Michigan State next week."
That MSU game begins at 7:00 p.m. next Tuesday, and is the first half of a two-match homestand which also sees the Falcons open Mid-American Conference play by hosting Northern Illinois University a week from Saturday (Oct. 3). The NIU match also will begin at 7:00 p.m. at Cochrane.
