Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green State University's Erica Hubert scored her fifth goal of the season late in the second half to knot the game with Miami at one, however, the Falcons surrendered another goal in the final period to fall to the RedHawks 2-1 Friday evening at Cochrane Stadium to open Mid-American Conference play.
The assist went to Haley Parkinson and Mikaela Couch, which was their third and fourth of the season, respectively. Couch's four assists are a team-high for the Falcons.
BGSU falls to 4-4-1 overall and 0-1-0 in the MAC with the loss, while Miami improves to 5-3-0 and 1-0-0 in conference play.
"MAC play is all about getting points so we want to try to find a way on Sunday to walk away with some," said head coach Lindsay Basalyga. "Our young players who are seeing a lot of time right now have to realize they have to turn around emotionally and play the game."
The Falcons and RedHawks played a scoreless 45 minutes to open the game, with Miami leading the shot column 7-2 at halftime.
Bowling Green sophomore Madison Schupbach registered both first-half shots for BGSU. The first attempt came in the 33rd minute, but her shot was blocked by a RedHawk defender. Schupbach kept the offensive pressure going, as she launched another shot five minutes later, forcing Miami goalkeeper Vic Maniaci to make a save on the play.
Miami's offensive attack put pressure on Lauren Cadel and the BGSU defense, registering three shots in the final five minutes of the opening period. Cadel recorded two saves on as many shots faced on goal to keep the score tied 0-0.
"[In the second half] we tried to get a few more numbers into the attack because I didn't feel like we were clean enough threatening enough in the final third of the field so that was one of the things we talked about at halftime," said Basalyga.
The RedHawks scored a quick goal to start the second period as Haley Walter played the ball across the box to Korrie Sauder in the 49th minute to go up 1-0 on the Falcons.
Following the Miami goal, BGSU posted three shots in a 10-minute span, with attempts from Paige Amodio, Jessica Creech and Hubert.
In the 70th minute, freshman Morgan Abbitt's shot sailed wide, but the Falcon offense refused to back off. Four minutes later it paid off as Hubert found the back of the net in the 74th minute to even the score at one a piece.
Hubert's goal would be the last shot the Falcons took in the game.
Kat Zalar, Miami's leading goal scorer and points leader entering the match, set up the RedHawks' go-ahead goal in the 82nd minute when she played the ball into Rachel Marble who headed a shot past Cadel.
Cadel finished with three total saves on the night.
BGSU was outshot 14-8 for the match, while Miami also held a 14-6 advantage in corner kicks.
"Although we've already had a couple games this season, MAC play is a brand new start. It's like a fresh slate," said Amodio. "The focus of the weekend is just getting points because all the teams [in the MAC] are so close and so competitive. I've been in the MAC for two years now and it's a really quick turnaround, but Sunday is a whole new game, a whole new opponent we've got to come out strong."
Bowling Green returns to Cochrane Stadium Sunday afternoon for a matchup with the Ball State Cardinals at 1 p.m.
