To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
James, a native of Mississauga, Ontario (Loyola Catholic Secondary), is a tri-captain of the 2015 Falcons. He played all 180 minutes of the Falcons' two wins last weekend, and scored a goal on a gorgeous trap-and-volley from the top of the 18-yard box in BGSU's match vs. SIUE Friday night (Aug. 28). The ball never touched the ground as James chested it down and volleyed it into the net, opening the scoring in what would turn out to be a 3-1 win.
Last season, James earned a plethora of honors as the Falcons had the program's highest win total in nearly two decades. He was an All-MAC Second-Team selection, and he was named to the NSCAA/Continental Tire All-Great Lakes Region Third Team. James was chosen to the All-Ohio Second Team, and also earned Academic All-MAC and Academic All-Ohio honors. Additionally, James was named a MAC Distinguished Scholar Athlete in the first year of that award's existence, and he was inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, the National College Athlete Honor Society, in March.
On the pitch last fall, James started 21 matches in the midfield, and tied for second on the team with six assists. He had an assist in each of the first three matches of the season as the Falcons got off to a 3-0 start, and he had helpers in back-to-back games in November. James picked up an assist at Northern Illinois as BG posted a 2-1 win to clinch a MAC Tournament berth, and he also had an assist vs. WVU in the Falcons' league tourney semifinal-round win.
In his BGSU career to date, James has played in all 62 of BGSU's matches, making 52 starts, and he has 22 career points on six goals and 10 assists.
The list of 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will then select the one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom character and competition.
The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2015 Men's College Cup in December. For more information on the award and/or the candidates, visit seniorCLASSaward.com.
James and the Falcons continue a season-long four-game homestand tonight (Thursday, Sept. 3), hosting Drexel in a 7:00 p.m. start at Cochrane Stadium. Then, the Brown and Orange will meet Cleveland State on Sunday evening (Sept. 6), with that match also scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. Admission is free to all BGSU soccer regular-season home matches.
