Falcons Knock Off Eastern Michigan, 67-63
January 27, 2016 | Women's Basketball
Myers, Lambert each hit four triples, BGSU holds off late EMU charge for third-straight win
The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team scorched the Stroh Center nets in the first half to build a double-digit lead, then held off a late surge by Eastern Michigan University. The Falcons downed the Eagles, 67-63, in Mid-American Conference action on Wednesday night (Jan. 27).
BGSU's starting guards -- sophomore Rachel Myers and freshman Sydney Lambert -- each hit four three-point field goals, combining for 32 points. The Falcons' starting center, Lauren Tibbs, nearly had a double-double, with 14 points and nine rebounds. And, the team's starting forwards -- senior Miriam Justinger and junior Ashley Tunstall -- each had eight points, three assists and two steals.

The Falcons (8-9, 4-4 MAC) have won three consecutive games for the first time this season. BG has doubled the team's conference win total for all of last season, when coach Jennifer Roos and the Falcons went 2-16 in MAC play after suffering multiple injuries.
Myers, after going 5-for-6 from behind the arc in Saturday's (Jan. 23) win over Kent State, hit four more triples against the Eagles, who were picked to win the MAC's West Division in the league's preseason poll. She wound up with a game-high 18 points.
Lambert, after hitting a career-high six treys vs. KSU, went 4-for-7 vs. Eastern, despite battling foul trouble. She scored 14 points in the win. Lambert and Myers each had five rebounds, and Lambert added four assists to lead the Falcons and tie for game honors.
Cha Sweeney led four double-digit scorers for the visitors. Sweeney had 15 points, but needed 23 shots to get there. She was 6-for-23 on the night, including a 1-for-9 performance from long distance.
Phillis Webb scored 11 points for Eastern, while Janay Morton and Sheyna Deans had 10 apiece. Deans just missed a double-double, with a team-leading nine rebounds off the bench.
BGSU shot a blistering 61.9 percent from the field in the first half, going 13-for-21 from the field to build a 36-24 halftime lead. The Falcons made 7-of-10 shots in the second quarter, including a 5-for-7 effort (71.4%) from three-point range in that period alone. BG went 7-of-11 from long distance in the opening half.
Meanwhile, the Falcons' defense allowed Eastern to make just nine total field goals and shoot only 25.7% (9-of-35) in the first 20 minutes.
The Eagles rallied back, with a furious 17-3 run over a five-minute span getting the visitors within just two points. In fact, EMU was within a bucket on two occasions in the late stages of the game, but the Falcons responded with points each time to keep the Eagles from having a chance to tie or take the lead.
BGSU led for over 36 minutes of Wednesday night's game. Lambert got the Falcons on the board with a three-pointer on BG's first possession, but Sera Ozelci responded with a triple of her own to tie the score before the game was one minute old. Tibbs made a backdoor cut to the basket, was fouled and split a pair of free throws, but Rachel Kehoe's jumper gave the visitors a 5-4 lead with 7:50 left in the opening period.
But, that would be Eastern's lone lead of the night. Justinger took a Tunstall pass and knocked down a trey for a 7-5 BG lead. Each of the Falcons' five starters hit at least one three-point try on the night as the Falcons went 11-23 (47.8%) from beyond the arc. Then, after EMU tied the score, Justinger converted a one-handed shot after driving through traffic.
That Justinger bucket began a 6-0 run for the Falcons. Justinger corralled a defensive rebound and wound up whipping a pass to Myers for a quick transition layup. Then, Myers drove the paint and dished a pass to junior Abby Siefker for a layup and a 13-7 lead.
Two Webb layups and a pair of Chanise Baldwin, however, enabled Eastern to equalize late in the period. Webb's first layup in that span came after BG had nearly stolen the ball, but with multiple Falcons on the ground in an effort to come up with the steal, Sweeney grabbed the ball and flipped a pass to an open Webb underneath the hoop.
With the score tied at 13-all, however, Tibbs split two charity tosses, then took a Lambert pass and hit a short jumper with 11 seconds left in the quarter, giving the Falcons a 16-13 lead after 10 minutes.
Tibbs opened the second-quarter scoring with a nifty pull-up jumper from the right side. After Sweeney hit a layup, a Lambert trey began an 8-0 BG run. Tunstall drove and kicked a pass to the freshman point guard for that triple from the right wing. Then, Lambert's pass found a wide-open Tibbs for an easy layup, and the two teamed up again as Lambert got the ball to the senior center at the top of the arc for a straightaway trey and a 26-15 lead at the 5:25 mark.
Sweeney came right back with a three-ball of her own, but redshirt sophomore Kennedy Kirkpatrick drove to the baseline on the left side, then fired a cross-court pass to Lambert in the right cormer. Lambert's triple try found nothing but net, and the Falcons' lead was in double figures once again.
Then, after Sweeney hit a pair of throws, junior Rachel Konieczki fed Tunstall for a straightaway trey and a 32-20 lead. EMU got within nine points, but another Konieczki assist resulted in a Myers pull-up three on the break, giving BG that 36-24 halftime advantage.
The third quarter began with an Ozelci triple, but Lambert answered with a long-range shot of her own, then found Myers for another three-pointer. BG's lead was 15 points, 42-27, with just over two minutes gone. The Eagles rallied to within 10 points before Myers rebounded her own miss and hit a floater in the lane. But, EMU would put together another mini-run, this time scoring six-straight points, capped by a steal and uncontested layup by Deans with 3:24 left in the period. The Eagles were within six points as the Falcons used a timeout.
BG snapped a four-and-a-half-minute scoring drought when Myers knocked down a long-distance try with the shot clock winding down. BG's lead was nine points, but after a Deans layup, each team hit a free throw before Lambert was called for her fourth foul of the game as the third-quarter clock neared zero. Baldwin missed her first toss, but made the second, and the Falcons' lead was 48-42 after three quarters.
Myers scored nine of BG's 12 points in that third period, and she continued her stellar shooting as the fourth period got underway. Tunstall found the sophomore for another three-point try, and it was on target with 38 seconds gone. Then, a pull-up jumper by Tunstall made it an 11-point Falcon lead as the Eagles used a timeout.
The timeout, however, did nothing to slow the BG offense. The Falcons scored on six of seven possessions to begin the fourth quarter, including on five-straight trips down the floor beginning with that Tunstall jumper.
In fact, BGSU got at least one offensive rebound and at least two second-chance points on each of the next four possessions. A Tunstall offensive board resulted in a baseline drive and acrobatic reverse, and-one layup by Justinger. The senior made the ensuing free throw for a 14-point BG lead.
Morton answered with a layup, but Tibbs responded with a putback. After a BG defensive stop, Justinger came up with an offensive rebound, and the possession ended in a Tibbs layup for a 60-44 lead with 5:25 remaining.
The Eagles got a Sweeney jumper, but Tunstall rebounded a teammate's miss in traffic and quickly laid the ball up and in. The Falcons had a 62-46 edge with 4:38 on the clock.
But, back came the visitors. Deans hit a jumper, Baldwin converted two free throws and Webb scored inside with 2:27 remaining. BG's lead was down to 10, and after a turnover when Deans tied up a BG player for a jump ball, Sweeney's jumper with just under two minutes left made it a 62-54 game.
BG used nearly all of the shot clock before Sweeney was called for a foul with 1:26 to go. But, the Falcons turned the ball over, and Morton fired the ball ahead to Deans for a layup with 1:18 left. Freshman Carly Santoro was fouled with 1:01 remaining, and missed the first free throw before hitting the second. However, Morton's three-pointer with 53.8 seconds on the clock made it a four-point game, 63-59.
And, Deans stole the ensuing inbounds pass, giving the ball back to the visitors. Sweeney's layup with 37 seconds to go cut the BG lead to two. The Falcons used nearly all of the shot clock on the next possession, before Deans fouled Lambert with five seconds on the shot clock and 12.5 seconds on the game clock. Lambert hit both tosses for a four-point BG lead, but the Eagles rebounded two missed shots at the other end before Baldwin hit a layup with exactly 3.0 seconds remaining.
But, Justinger fired a long inbounds pass to Santoro, who raced downcourt ahead of the pack and laid the ball off the glass and through the hoop just before the buzzer sounded. BG had a two-possession lead once again, and although the officials checked the monitor and put 0.5 seconds back on the clock, there was nothing the Eagles could do, and the home team had the four-point win.
The Falcons shot 48.0% from the field for the game, while EMU shot just 36.5%. The Eagles held a slim 35-33 rebounding advantage, but despite pulling down 17 offensive boards to BG's nine, EMU was outscored in second-chance points. The Falcons enjoyed a 16-11 result in that category.
The Falcons now prepare for a Saturday (Jan. 30) matchup with the arch-rival University of Toledo. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at UT's Savage Arena. BG will play two consecutive games on the road, heading to Central Michigan for a Feb. 6 contest before returning to the Stroh to face Western Michigan four days later (Feb.10).
