Senior Lauren Tibbs led the Falcons (8-10, 4-5 MAC) with 16 points, while freshman Sydney Lambert scored 13 and senior Miriam Justinger 10.
The Rockets (10-9, 5-3 MAC) got 15 points from Brenae Harris, 14 from Jay-Ann Bravo-Harriott and 11 from Ana Capotosto.
The Falcons got off to a nearly-perfect start, taking an early 12-4 lead. Junior Ashley Tunstall converted a driving layup on the game's opening possession, and Justinger came up with a steal and hit a three-pointer for a 5-0 lead with just 31 seconds gone.
Capotosto grabbed her own miss and laid the ball up and in, but Tibbs blocked a Sophie Reecher shot moments later, and the next possession saw Lambert hit a three-pointer from the top of the arc. BG was up by an 8-2 count.
Capotosto scored for the Rockets, but Tibbs backed her defender down and hit a turnaround layup. Then, after a BG miss, a long rebound came out to midcourt, where Lambert grabbed it. The freshman took several dribbles and knocked down a pull-up jumper from just inside the three-point line. BGSU's lead was eight points, and Toledo took a timeout with 6:41 left in the quarter.
The Rockets battled back, as Bravo-Harriott and Monakana sandwiched three-pointers around a Tibbs pull-up jumper, Justinger knocked down a driving layup, though, and sophomore Rachel Myers was fouled on a drive and converted both of the ensuing free throws, giving the Falcons an 18-10 advantage with 2:51 remaining in the period.
But, the home team would score the last nine points of the period to take a one-point lead after 10 minutes of action.
Jada Woody's three-point play began that run with 2:40 left in the period, and Harris hit a layup. BGSU's first turnover of the day resulted in a Capotosto bucket, and Bravo-Harriott's layup in the final minute of the period gave UT a 19-18 lead.
The Falcons, after turning the ball over just once in the first quarter, committed turnovers on the first three possessions of the second. Layups by Capotosto and Kaayla McIntyre gave the hosts a 13-0 run, before Justinger threw the ball inside to Tibbs for a layup at the 7:43 mark, cutting UT's lead to 23-20.
The Rockets got a pair of layups over the next few minutes, and after a Myers three-point try was halfway through the cylinder before bouncing back out, Harris hit a corner three for the hosts, and UT's lead was 30-21 as BGSU called a timeout.
Junior Abby Siefker came up with an offensive rebound in traffic, putting the ball back up and in. Then, a Tibbs banker cut UT's lead to five points. The hosts responded with four-straight points of their own, but Siefker's left-side jumper went down, and Lambert hit a three-ball to cut the Rocket lead to four, at 34-30.
Monakana answered with a layup, but sophomore Haley Puk drove into the lane and flipped a pass to Lambert, who drilled a three-pointer from the left side. The Rockets' lead was down to three, and it dwindled to a single point then Myers fed Tibbs for a quick turnaround shot off glass with 12 seconds left in the half. But, Reecher's shot in the paint bounced around the rim as the first-half buzzer sounded, and finally fell through the hoop to give the home team a 38-35 lead at the break.
The Rockets scored the first two hoops of the third quarter to take a seven-point lead. Harris opened the scoring, hitting a jumper just before -- or, in the minds of many on the BG bench, just after -- the shot-clock horn sounded. Bravo-Harriott's layup made it a 42-35 game. Lambert hit a pull-up jumper, but Monakana responded with a bucket inside, then fed McIntyre for a layup and a nine-point advantage, the largest lead for either team to that point.
Justinger answered with a left-side driving layup, and after Harris hit a pair of free throws, Tunstall got to the line and swished a pair of shots. When Puk canned a jumper in the paint, UT's lead was 48-43 with 3:30 left in the period.
Bravo-Harriott hit a pair of charity tosses, but Siefker's nifty pass found Tunstall for a foul-line jumper. Puk split a pair of tosses to cut the UT lead to four points, but a Capotosto layup was followed by a transition layup for Monakana, giving the home side a 55-46 lead. Redshirt sophomore Kennedy Kirkpatrick's driving layup cut that lead to seven, and BG got a stop, but a Falcon layup in traffic would not drop as the third-quarter horn sounded. UT led, 55-48, after 30 minutes.
The fourth quarter saw Monakana hit a three-pointer for a 58-48 lead on the first possession. Kirkpatrick drove and dished to Tibbs for a layup, but McIntyre answered with a shot in the lane. But, a Kirkpatrick entry pass found Tibbs for another bucket inside, and Puk's foul-line jumper cut the Rockets' lead to 60-54 with 7:35 still to play.
But, the hosts would answer. After a pair of free throws, Bravo-Harriott hit a three-pointer from the right wing, and a Harris jumper made it a 13-point game, 67-54. Tunstall powered her way inside and scored, but a Monakana three made it a 70-56 game, and BG would get no closer than 11 points the rest of the way.
Tunstall had eight points for the Falcons, while Puk and Siefker added five and four, respectively, off the bench.
The Rockets shot 51.6 percent from the field in the first half and 49.1% for the game, while BG shot 42.4% from the field on the afternoon.
For the first time in 18 games this season, the Falcons were held to fewer than five three-pointers. BG was 4-of-19 from long distance on the day. The Rockets were an efficient 7-for-15 from beyond the arc. No player on either team had more than six rebounds as the teams tied, 32-32, in that category.
The Falcons are now idle until next Saturday (Feb. 6), when BG takes on Central Michigan in Mount Pleasant, Mich. Then, the Brown and Orange will return home to face Western Michigan (Feb. 10) and Buffalo (Feb. 13) at the Stroh Center.
