Garda Named MAC East Defensive Player Of The Week For Third Time In 2016
October 10, 2016 | Volleyball
CLEVELAND, Ohio – For the third time this season, Madeline Garda, a senior libero on the Bowling Green State University volleyball team, was named the MAC East Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday (Oct. 10) afternoon.
Earlier in the season, on Sept. 12 and Sept. 19, Garda earned the honor in consecutive weeks. It's been quite the senior season for Garda, who broke the school record for digs in a single match with a 40-dig effort on Sept. 10 versus Drake. She's also been named the tournament MVP at both the BGSU Invitational (Sept. 2-3) and UIC Invitational (Sept. 11-12).
The senior led BGSU defensively to a perfect 2-0 weekend on the road in MAC play across Oct. 7-8. Garda, who leads the country in digs per set (6.63) and total digs (444), had a monster weekend defensively. She totaled 61 digs in two matches -- good enough for a ridiculous digs per set average of 8.71. Garda averaged over 30 digs per match.
In Friday's (Oct. 7) win at Akron, she notched 35 digs (8.75 digs/set), which is the second most in school history for a four-set match. She followed that effort up with a 26-dig (8.67 digs/set) match in a victory over Buffalo (Oct. 8).
Garda and the Falcons will finish off a four-match road swing this weekend with matches at Eastern Michigan (Oct. 14) and Central Michigan (Oct. 15). Bowling Green will then return to the Stroh Center to host Ball State on Oct. 21, before staging a Battle of I-75 showdown with Toledo on Oct. 22.
