Falcons Place Second at Dennis Stark Relays
SOUTH BEND, IND. – The Bowling Green Falcon swimming and diving team finished second at the Dennis Stark Relays meet, hosted by Notre Dame on Friday night.
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish, competitors in the ACC, were host for not only your Falcons, but also to Wright State, Olivet Nazarene, Illinois State, as well as Indiana State. The meet included a total of eighteen swimming and four diving events, half for the women's teams and the other half for the men's teams. Your Bowling Green Falcons scored a grand total of 98 points by the end of the night to steal away second place and finish only behind the Fighting Irish, who scored a total of 154 points.
The BGSU Falcon's A teams ended up with seven second place finishes, including the 3x100 breaststroke, 4x200 freestyle, 4x100 medley, 3x100 backstroke, 3x500 freestyle, 4x100 freestyle, and the 4x50 freestyle relays. The women's team, led by head coach Matt Ense, who is in his second year at BGSU, also had one third place finish in the 3x100 butterfly. The 4x100 individual medley relay, however, was an event in which the Falcons received an unfortunate disqualification from the event.
Bowling Green State University's Hall of Famer, Phil Koester, is in his first year coaching the university's diving team. It is quite the impact Koester is making already, as the Falcons were able to earn two second places at the meet. The 1-meter event was well represented by sophomores Claire Stam and Ashley White, scoring a total of 438.85 points to finish second, only behind host Notre Dame, who scored 534.65 points. Later on, school record holder for the 3-meter diving event, Claire Stam, made a second appearance at the meet, only now in the 3-meter diving event and in the company of junior teammate, Kylie Bosco. Both Falcons represented the program by recording a score of 485.85 points in the event, to finish in second place once again behind the Fighting Irish.
Your Falcons have a busy weekend ahead, as they move on from the Dennis Stark Relays meet into fall-break-weekend-long training camp at the IU Natatorium, which is located on the IUPUI campus. The IU Natatorium is the designated location for the upcoming 2017 NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships.
The team has one weekend off and then is back to business for the Falcons as they host school rival, the Toledo Rockets. The Falcons expect to see you on Friday, Oct. 21 in Cooper Pool at 6:00 P.M.
