BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team and head coach Danijela Tomic announced the signing of two future student-athletes on Monday (Nov. 14) to National Letters of Intent. Jacqueline Askin (Louisville, Kentucky / Assumption High School) and Katie Kidwell (Watseka, Illinois / Watseka Community High School) are set to join the program for the 2017 season.
"We are thrilled to welcome two outstanding student-athletes, Jacqueline Askin and Katie Kidwell, to our BGSU Volleyball program," commented Tomic. "Both come from great families and will make us better on and off the court with their character and volleyball talent. We can't wait to have them with us in Bowling Green next summer!"
Askin has earned four varsity letters at Assumption High School playing for coach Ron Kordes. Askin has had an extremely successful high school career, and is a two-time state champion. Askin led her team to a 37-6 record and a state title her freshman year, and then went 36-7 and captured another state championship her junior year.
The Louisville, Kentucky native also guided her team to a pair of regional championship game appearances in 2014 and 2016. Additionally, Askin was named to the All-Region Team in 2015, and in 2016, received All-State Honorable Mention honors. Askin comes from an athletic family, as her father John played for the Cleveland Browns after playing for Notre Dame in college, and her mother Denise played basketball at Notre Dame. Askin has two older sisters, Sarah and Ashley, as well as an older brother, John Michael. Ashley currently plays volleyball at Georgia Tech.
"Jacqueline comes from one of the most successful high school (Assumption) and club programs (KIVA) in the country that are known for their skilled and competitive players," said Tomic. "She is a six-rotation outside hitter, with a high volleyball IQ who knows how to win. Jacqueline will add depth to our outside hitter position and has potential to have an immediate impact on our team."
Kidwell, a native of Watseka, Illinois and a current student at Watseka Community High School, played four seasons of varsity volleyball for coaches Krista Pufahl and Troy Simpson. For her career, Kidwell racked up 692 kills, 476 digs, 236 blocks, and 131 aces. Kidwell led her team to 36-win seasons in 2013, 2014 and 2016. Kidwell plays club volleyball for team Impulse, and has won a pair of tournaments for the club.
Kidwell was named the Area Player of the Year, as well as the Conference Player of the Year in 2016. In 2015, Kidwell was named her school's MVP, and earned All-State honors. Kidwell's team won the conference and regionals all four years of her career, and they won super sectionals in 2014, and finished the year ranked third in the state. Kidwell has two older brothers, John and Austin, and one younger sister, Priya. She is the daughter of John and Dawn Kidwell.
"Katie is one of the most athletic and versatile players I have recruited. She can play as an outside, middle or opposite hitter, and also can serve receive and play defense," said Tomic. "She has so much potential and once her volleyball skills match her athleticism, she will be hard to stop on the volleyball court. Katie has been a part of a winning high school program and she knows how to be a go-to player and a leader, which will serve her well at BGSU."
