Bowling Green, Ohio – Despite falling to Eastern Michigan in the battle of the birds, the Falcons flew by the SEMO Redhawks on Saturday night scoring a season-high 195.425. The team has improved their score in every meet this season, culminating a result that ranks 10th best in program history. The Eagles recorded a 196.600 and SEMO finished with a 192.800.
"It was really electric in Anderson Arena tonight," said head coach Kerrie Turner. "That's the great thing about competing here is that it's the house that roars. Our fans were here in bulk and we love them cheering us on. The team themselves really kept the momentum from start to finish even though we had a few mistakes here and there, they just kept going and that's really been a strength this season."
For the first time in 2016, the Falcons had two individuals hit the 9.9 mark with senior Alyssa Nocella and sophomore Mitchell recording the team's top scores of the season. Nocella's 9.9 came on uneven bars where she now has the third highest score recorded in school history on the event. Mitchell's 9.9 on balance beam was also a career-high, where she now has the second highest score in program history. The last time BGSU had two individuals score a 9.9 or higher was on Feb 23, 2013.
In all-around competition, Nocella placed first with a 39.325, good for fourth best in BGSU history. Teammate Lauren Feely was not far behind, finishing second with the eighth best score in school history (39.175).
Additionally, Nocella took first place on uneven bars, as well as tied for third with Feely on vault. Mitchell tied for second place on balance beam.
The Falcons began on vault, where they recorded a season-high score of 48.800 on the event. The Orange and Brown were led by Nocella and Feely with a pair of season-high 9.825s. The duo tied for third overall on the apparatus. Junior Victoria Heath recorded a career best score of 9.800, vaulting fifth for the Falcons.
Sitting in second place after the first rotation, the team earned another season-high event score, this time on uneven bars with a 48.925. Nocella led the way with a 9.9, followed by Rachel Reis and Feely with 9.8s, and freshman Shannon Goniwiecha had a career best 9.725. Mitchell rounded out the top five on the event with a 9.700.
BGSU's highest event score of the night came on balance beam, as the Falcons recorded their second score of the season over 49. The team's 49.100 was comprised of Mitchell's 9.9, Caroline Ellingboe's career-high 9.875, Nocella's season-high 9.85, Jordan Rae's season-high 9.775, and Feely's 9.700.
"Balance beam is one of the most difficult events to compete because there's just not a lot of room for error. To see the 49 plus there, what an accomplishment. It was awesome to see some big scores. Laura Mitchell has been dying to get that 9.9 and knocks one out there at the end of the lineup. It's a really good sign for the season as we progress," said Turner.
The Falcons finished the meet on floor exercise, recording a 48.600. Feely's 9.85 was a team-high on the apparatus.
Following the meet, senior Caroline Ellingboe received a surprise from a friendly face. Watch the video here.
