DelPiombo Joins the BGSU Volleyball Staff

Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green State University volleyball head coach Danijela Tomic is excited to announce the addition of Alex DelPiombo to the coaching staff effective immediately."I am thrilled to welcome Alex to the Falcon family. She brings a wealth of experience at the setter position and in recruiting. Alex is a rising star in the volleyball coaching community, who is highly respected by her peers. Everyone I have spoken with had only great things to say about her as a coach, but more importantly as a person," stated Coach Tomic. "Alex is a great fit for our program and her personality mixes well with that of our players and staff. We were excited during the interview process because she seemed like the perfect fit from the beginning. Moreover, Alex is a great recruiter who is well organized, professional and experienced, and she will be a great asset to our program in a role of a recruiting coordinator."
DelPiombo comes to Bowling Green State University with over 15 years of coaching and playing experience. She most recently served two years as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Samford University in Birmingham, Ala.
"I am beyond excited and thankful to be a part of the BGSU family. I think that the volleyball program is heading in a great direction and I can't wait to do whatever I can to add to it. Getting to know Coach Tomic and the team really solidified my decision to become a Falcon. Both the coaching staff and girls have commendable work ethics and I have great respect for that," commented DelPiombo. I have been fortunate to have great people support me throughout my career in my family, former coaches and bosses, mentors, and my players. I thank them for all of my successes. Prior to her time at Samford, DelPiombo worked for two years as an assistant coach and the director of volleyball operations at Morehead State University.
While an assistant coach at Samford, DelPiombo managed the recruiting efforts and was the primary contact to all potential student-athletes, organized the recruiting visits and campus tours. She also worked directly with the setters, while also assisting in all areas of on court training, video analysis, team travel and the promotion and organization of the volleyball summer camps.
Over her two seasons at Samford, the Bulldogs posted an overall record of 35-25 and a 21-11 record in Southern Conference play.
In 2014, the Bulldogs finished the season with a record of 20-13 overall and won the 2014 Southern Conference Championship Tournament with a 3-1 win over Furman in the championship match to advance to the 2014 NCAA Women's Volleyball Championship Tournament. Samford drew Alabama in the first round of the NCAA Tournament and took the Crimson Tide to five sets before falling to the SEC powerhouse, 3-2. Michaela Reesor earned a spot on the All-SoCon First Team, while Chelsi Carter and Erin Bognar were both named to the All-SoCon Second Team.
With the loss of three starters, including the 2013 SoCon Player of the Year and the 2013 SoCon Libero of the Year heading in to the 2015 season, the Bulldogs finished the year with an overall record of 15-12 and finished in fourth-place overall in the Southern Conference with a 10-6 league record on the season. T.J. Russell and Bognar were both named to the All-SoCon Second Team, while Kate Neisler earned a spot on the All-SoCon Freshmen Team.
DelPiombo's time as an assistant coach and director of operations at MSU provided her the opportunity to gain experience in setter training and other aspects of on court training. She also assisted in recruiting, team academic advising and scheduling. She was very involved in community relations as she promoted and organized summer camps and kids clinics.
During her time at Morehead State in 2012 and 2013, she helped guide the Eagles to a conference-record 24-match winning streak and the team's third and fourth straight Ohio Valley Conference titles, winning the championship in both 2012 and 2013. The Eagles posted an overall OVC record of 31-1, recorded back-to-back seasons with the highest attendance in the OVC in 2012 and 2013, and also made an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2013.
In 2013, DelPiombo's second on the MSU sidelines, the Eagles went 27-8 overall, 15-1 in conference play and won both the 2013 OVC Regular Season Championship and the 2013 OVC Championship Tournament. MSU fell to the No. 18 ranked Fighting Illini of the Big-10 in the first round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament.
The previous season in 2012, MSU posted an overall record of 26-7 and went a perfect 16-0 in OVC play to win the 2012 OVC Regular Season Championship, their third straight OVC Championship title.
Over her two seasons with the Eagles, DelPiombo helped to tutor five All-OVC honorees in Ellie Roberson, Annie Gruenschlaeger, Leslie Schellhaas, Courtney Smith and Aryn Bohannon, as well as a 2013 All-OVC Newcomer selection in Alex Fitzmorris.
A recipient of a 2011 American Volleyball Coaches Association Coaches4Coaches Scholarship, DelPiombo has assisted in the coordination and promotion of summer camps at both Samford and Morehead State. She has also served as the setting position coach for both the Dex Volleyball Camp, LLC. and the Morehead Volleyball Camp, LLC., and worked as an assistant coach at the KIVA Elite Camp, the Joe Getzin Whitehall High School Camp and as an assistant camps coach for four years at Gannon University.
DelPiombo was a decorated player for four years at Gannon University (Pa.) where she was the starting setter her final two seasons and served as the team captain for two seasons as well. She finished her career with 1,754 assists to rank seventh in school history. DelPiombo also helped guide Gannon to three NCAA Tournament berths.
As a four-time member of the school's Dean's List, she was also a four-time winner of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete award during her collegiate career.
She graduated in 2012 with a bachelor's degree in communications.
A native of Monroe, Mich., she attended St. Mary's Catholic Central High School where she was a two-sport star, lettering in both volleyball and softball, and a three year team captain for the volleyball team. DelPiombo led her volleyball team to the state title her junior season. She was twice named to the Michigan All-State First Team and was tabbed the Region Player of the Year her senior season.
