On Friday, the Brown and Orange had allowed a homer to Dartmouth's Katie McEachern to lead off the game, and the score remained 1-0 until the Falcons scored five times in the sixth inning for a 5-1 win.
On Saturday, the BGSU-DC game was scoreless through five frames, but the Falcons again plated five in the sixth. McEachern again accounted for the lone run for the Big Green, with a solo shot in the bottom of the sixth, but BG answered with a run in the seventh.
BGSU outhit DC, 6-3, in the win, and the Falcons also saw six batters hit by pitches to reach base. Meanwhile, Falcon junior Briana Combs fired a complete-game three-hitter for her first win of the season. She faced only four batters over the minimum, striking out five without allowing a walk.
Redshirt sophomore Chelsea Raker led the Falcons with a 2-for-2 performance at the plate. Raker reached base in all four of her plate appearances, walking once and becoming one of the six BG batters to be plunked by a pitch.
"Briana Combs had a stellar performance on the mound for us against Dartmouth," said Falcon head coach Sarah Willis. "She did a great job of keeping their hitters off balance and keeping us in the game until our offense got going. Our defense was solid all game lone, and it was great to see our bats come alive in that sixth inning."
Raker's HBP came with two outs in the top of the first. She advanced to second on a wild pitch, before DC starter Breanna Ethridge plunked senior Marisa Shook as well. But, Ethridge got out of the jam, getting a fly ball that produced the third out.
DC leadoff hitter McEachern, as mentioned, began Friday's game with a solo homer, but Combs threw a third strike past her to begin the bottom of the first on Saturday morning. The BG junior then got a pair of fly balls to retire the side in order.
Sophomore Morgan Evangelista was hit by a pitch in the second inning, and got as far as second before Ethridge got the third out. In the bottom of the inning, Combs hit Kassidy Williams with a pitch with two outs, but got a grounder to Raker at third base to end the inning.
Raker reached base for the second time in as many at-bats, with a two-out walk in the third, but a popup to shortstop followed. DC also got a two-out baserunner, as McEachern reached on an infield single – the first hit of the game for either team – but Combs got Lourlin Lara to ground out to third.
Karen Chaw singled to left to lead off the Dartmouth half of the fourth. Combs retired the next two batters, with Chaw taking second on a grounder, but the runner advanced to third on a wild pitch with two down. Combs, however, proceeded to strike out Williams to end the threat and keep the game scoreless.
Senior Marina Cobbs drew a two-out walk in the fifth, but the Falcons could advance her no further. In the Dartmouth half of the fifth, however, the Big Green went down in order, with a grounder to second, a bunt back toward the circle for the second out, and a grounder to third that retired the side.
Ethridge no-hit the Falcons through five innings, but Raker led off the sixth with a single to right, and pinch-runner Molly Holliday promptly stole second. Then, Shook blooped a double into shallow right, for the Falcons' second hit of the game, and second hit in as many batters. Lauren Stone replaced Ethridge in the circle, but hit junior Haley Schrock with a pitch to load the bases with no outs, and sophomore Kayla Koch singled to score Holliday with the game's first run.
Stone struck out the next batter, but sophomore Katee Hinkle was hit by a pitch to move each runner along, with Shook trotting home for a 2-0 BGSU lead. Then, pinch-hitter Trista Mokienko lifted a fly ball to center, with Schrock tagging and scoring the Falcons' third run of the inning and the game. Then, Cobbs lined a single to left-center to score with Koch and Hinkle and make it a 5-0 game.
McEachern homered to lead off the DC half of the sixth. But, shortstop Aspen Searle threw out the next two batters who hit ground balls her way, and Raker gloved a foul pop just wide of third base for out number three.
The game headed to the seventh, and Raker reached base for the fourth time in as many plate appearances. The redshirt soph singled to left to begin the inning, and one out later, she headed to second on Schrock's single up the middle. Koch hit a ball back to the circle, and everyone was safe when Stone's throw was wild. Shrock advanced to third and Raker crossed the plate on the play.
Evangelista was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but Stone got each of the next two BG batters out on called third strikes. In the bottom of the inning, though, Combs got a pair of strikeouts, then a grounder to third to close out the win.
Combs threw 62 strikes among her 95 total pitches in the complete-game win. For the Big Green, Ethridge allowed only two hits, but two runs in five-plus innings. She walked two batters and struck out four.
Stone gave up four runs (three earned) in two innings of relief work. She surrendered four hits, but struck out five and did not walk a batter.
Both Dartmouth pitchers, however, hit three Falcon batters in the game.
In addition to Raker's 2-for-2 game, Cobbs had a hit, a walk and a pair of runs batted in for the Falcons. McEachern had two of Dartmouth's three hits.
In BG's second game of the day, the Falcons broke on top in the bottom of the second. But, Wichita State scored twice in the third and four more times in the fourth for a 6-1 lead. The Brown and Orange cut the deficit to 6-4, but a three-run Shocker sixth inning gave WSU some insurance.
WSU pounded out 15 hits, with each of the top-three batters in the lineup getting three hits.
BGSU starting pitcher Kiley Sosby hit a batter in the top of the first, and that batter, Mackenzie Wright, got as far as third base, but Sosby struck out Paige Luellen to end the inning.
The Falcons were retired in order in the bottom of the inning, and Sosby hit another WSU batter in the second inning, but then got the next three batters. Shook led off the bottom of the second by blasting her fifth homer of rhe year to left-center for a 1-0 BG lead.
The Shockers, though, answered quickly. With one out in the third, Kelli Spring reached on a bunt single. With two outs, Brittany Fortner singled up the middle, and Luellen doubled to center to score both runners. Sosby struck out Liz Broyles to end the half-inning, but WSU had the lead.
Wichita took a 6-1 lead with a four-spot in the fourth. Macklin Hitz reached on a one-out infield single, and took second whan Cassidy Kelsheimer singled as well. A sacrifice bunt put two runners in scoring position with two down, and the Shockers got three consecutive hits to extned the lead.
First, Spring singled to score Hitz. Then, after Spring stole second, Wright's single plated a pair of runners. Then, Fortner doubled to score Wright and chase Sosby.
Freshman Brooke Parker replaced Sosby, and walked Luellen before inducing Broyles to hit a grounder to the left side that resulted in a force play for the third out.
The Falcons cut into the deficit over the next few innings. In the fourth, Hinkle walked and moved to second on Searle's single. A base hit by Shook loaded the bases, and Schrock's single scored Hinkle. Then, Sosby singled up the middle, with Searle crossing the plate. Ashlynne Neil replaced Jenni Brooks in the circle, and got the next two hitters to hit grounders resulting in force plays at the plate. Then, she fielded another grounder herself, throwing to first for the third out.
In the BG fifth, Searle doubled, and after a Shook walk, Searle scored wen Schrock reached on a fielding error. But, the Shockers were able to get five sixth-inning hits to score three more runs. All five hits were singles, but when the smoke cleared, WSU had a 9-4 lead.
Neil worked around a Sami Parave single in the sixth, and Combs and senior Katie Turski combined to keep WSU off the scoreboard in the top of the seventh. In the bottom of the inning, the Falcons loaded the bases against Kaitlyn Malone, as Hinkle was hit by a pitch and Searle and Shooke each singled. But, Malone got a shallow fly ball for the first out, and a popup to short resulted in a game-ending double play.
Spring, Wright and Fortner each had three hits for the Shockers, with Spring scoring three runs in the win. Wright, Fortner and Luellen each drove in a pair of runs.
For the Falcons, Shook was 3-for-3 at the plate with the homer and a walk, while Searle went 3-for-4 and scored twice.
Neil picked up the win in relief for the Shockers, allowing just one (unearned) run and two hits in three innings of work. She was the second of three pitchers for WSU.
The Falcons used four pitchers, with Sosby taking the loss to fall to 2-3 on the year. Turski got the final two outs of the game, seeing her first game action for the Falcons since the 2014 season. Fellow senior Chandler Scott also played in her first game since the '14 campaign.
"Our team was flat coming out in game two," said Willis. "Wichita State is a good program, and they took advantage of us playing on our heels. We will need to have a sense of urgency tomorrow on defense if we are to keep the game close.
"I thought our lineup did a good job keeping pressure on their defense, but we just fell short of capitalizing on a few innings where we had the bases loaded. We did not play BG softball in the second game, and it showed."
The Falcons conclude weekend action on Sunday (Feb. 28), taking on WSU once again in a game slated to begin at 10:00 a.m. locally (11:00 a.m. ET).
In Saturday's second game, the Brown and Orange fell, 9-4, to Wichita State University. Both games were part of the South Alabama Invitational.
The Falcons are now 5-7 on the season.
