BOWLING GREEN, Ohio –The Bowling Green State University swimming and diving program finished third at the 2016 Mid-American Conference Championships, marking the fourth straight year the Falcons have finished in the top three. Franziska Wohlert (400 IM) and Daniela Carrillo (200 Breast) both became MAC Champions, marking the first time since the 1993-94 season that the Falcons have finished with multiple champions at the MAC meet.
Â
After Wohlert's MAC Championship in the 400 IM on Friday evening, it was Carrillo's turn on Saturday night in the 200 Breast. Carrillo entered as the top seed in the event, after swimming a 2:10.01 in the morning prelims to set a new school record. That qualifying time was inside the top 30 times in the entire country, made the B cut mark, and was just .22 off the MAC record. In the evening finals, Carrillo swam a 2:10.60 to be crowned a MAC Champion – the seventh in the event in school history, and the first since 2004. Her finals time was second in school history, just behind her school record time from the morning.
Â
Senior Jordan Bullock had a strong swim in the 200 fly finals, finishing second with a 2:00.70 – fifth-best in school history. Bullock had qualified for the championship final in the event after swimming a 2:00.62 in the morning prelims, the fourth-best swim in school history.
Â
Sophomore Natalie Criswell swam in the 1,650 free to kick off the evening finals, placing third in the event with a time of 16:50.71. Her swim was the second-best in school history, missing Cheryl Patteson's (1996) school record mark of 16:50.56. Criswell's swim, however, was good enough in the first 1,000 to set a new school record with a mark of 10:07.92.
Â
Victoria Griffin was victorious in the 100 free consolation finals, as three Falcons – Kayla Effinger and Hannah Newman joining Griffin – competed in the B finals heat. Griffin's time of 49.99 was the fourth-best in school history and achieved B cut. Effinger finished third in the consolation finals, while Newman was eighth.
Â
In the 200 back, Wohlert finished fifth with a time of 1:58.50. That swim placed her fifth in the BGSU record books and was a B cut mark. She was joined in the finals of the 200 back by Elodie Schreiber (A finals) and Maya Skorupski (B finals). In the 200 breast consolation finals, Emily Verbrugge and Kristin Filby finished second and third, respectively. The Falcons swam a 3:21.53 in the 400 free relay to finish in a tie for third.
Â
In total, the Falcons had 15 swimmers compete in Saturday night's finals and finished with 478 points for their fourth consecutive third place finish. The Falcons set six new school records at the 2016 Championships and totaled 27 swims inside the top 10 of school history.
Â
Six swimmers earned All-Mid-American Conference honors for their efforts in the 2016 Championships at Cooper Pool. Jordan Bullock, Natalie Criswell, Victoria Griffin and Emily Verbrugge earned second team honors while Daniela Carrillo and Franziska Wohlert earned first team recognition.
