Falcons Finish 12th at Rio Verde Invitational

Rio Verde, Arizona – The Bowling Green State University women's golf team carded a final round 303, +15, on Sunday to climb two more spots up the leaderboard and into a tie for 12th-place overall with a 54-hole team score of 914, +50, at the three-day 2016 Rio Verde Invitational hosted by Western Michigan University at the Rio Verde Country Club in Arizona.
The Falcons turned in team rounds of 310, 301 and 303 to finish in a tie for 12th-place overall with the Ohio Bobcats out of the 18-team field with a 54-hole score of 914, +50. BGSU finished ahead of Akron (915), Western Michigan (923), Ball State (924), Illinois State (928) and Seton Hall (944).
"This event was a total team effort. There were a lot of talented teams here in Rio Verde," added head coach Stephanie Young. "Coach Powers and I are proud of the way we improved as the weekend went on and that we moved up the board today."
Senior Lily Bartell recorded a top-25 place finish, finishing in a tie for 24th overall with a final score of 225, +9. Bartell, who's 54-hole score of 225 this weekend was her lowest on the year, concluded the weekend with a second consecutive round of 74, +2. She turned in a round of 77, +5, on Friday, and back-to-back rounds of 74, +2, on Saturday and Sunday to lead the Falcons. Bartell finished with seven total birdies and 32 pars over her three rounds of play.
Freshman Erin Fahey finished just three strokes behind Bartell with her 54-hole score of 228, +12, and in a tie for 36th-place overall. The three-round combined score of 228 is a BGSU career-low for the first year Falcon. Fahey, who had 14 pars overall on Sunday, carded rounds of 79, 73 and 76 over the three days of play. She finished the weekend with four birdies and a team-high 37 pars.
The Falcons' Hannah Lewis bounced back from a second round 82, +10, on Saturday with a final round 76, +4, on Sunday to finish the three-round event with rounds of 76, 82 and 76 and a 54-hole score of 234, +18. Lewis, who placed in a tie for 55th-place overall, totaled four birdies and 30 pars over her three rounds of play in Arizona.
BGSU's Mikayla Baer placed in a tie for 71st overall with her 54-hole score of 238, +22. The junior shot rounds of 78, 78 and 82 over the three-round event, recording four birdies and 25 pars from Friday to Sunday.
Finishing in a tie for 79th-place overall was Madelynn Swank, as the sophomore turned in a 54-hole score of 240, +24. Playing in her first event for the Orange and Brown on the year, Swank registered rounds of 87, 76 and 77 over the 54-hole event. Swank recorded a total of 20 pars and one birdie overall for the Falcons over the three-day event.
Toledo turned in a team-low round 293, +5, on Sunday to pull away for the overall team win with a three-round combined score of 885, +21.
Wichita State (896), UM-Kansas City (896) and Missouri State (896) all finished in a tie for second-place overall, while Eastern Michigan (900) and Bradley (900) ended in a tie for fifth-place overall.
The Falcons will return to the links for competition in two weeks on Mar. 14-15 at the ORU/SFA Women's Spring Break Invite held at The Trophy Club golf course in Dallas, Texas.
