Bowling Green, Ohio – It was a record-setting night for the Bowling Green State University gymnastics team, as it set two school records in a team win over Mid-American Conference foe Northern Illinois on Saturday. In front of a roaring crowd of 466 at Anderson Arena, the Falcons earned a 196.500 to NIU's 195.475, demolishing the previous school best of 196.100.
"I don't even know if I can put into words what an incredible feeling this is," said head coach Kerrie Turner. "The team stumbled a little on Thursday night, and we talked on the bus ride home. I said 'We are done talking and we just have to do it' and MAN did they do it!"Â
The last time BGSU scored 49.000 pluses on all four events was back in 2005. In that meet, the team set what was then a school-record of 196.100.
"We really needed this. I've been telling them 'You're not a good team. You're a great team,'"Â added Turner.
The Falcons' success showed on all four events, as the team recorded multiple 9.900s on one event on two separate occasions at the meet (beam, floor). This feat alone had yet to happen in the Turner era, and BGSU managed to accomplish this twice in one day.
BGSU led the Huskies after all four rotations, culminating to the record-setting outcome.
Individually, senior Alyssa Nocella won the all-around with a career-high 39.425 (9.850 vault, 9.850 bars, 9.825 beam, 9.900 floor). Junior Lauren Feely placed second, also earning a career-high. Her 39.375 was comprised of 9.850 vault, 9.800 bars, 9.825 beam and 9.900 floor scores.
The meet started with the Falcons on vault, where they recorded a season-high 49.025. Nocella notched a new career-high 9.850, Feely also earned a 9.850, and freshman Lauren De Meno scored a career-best 9.825. Junior Victoria Heath (9.775) and sophomore Shannon Goniwiecha (9.725) rounded out the lineup for the home team. Nocella and Feely tied for first place overall and De Meno placed tied for third.
Success continued to rotation two, as BGSU tied its season-high of 49.050. Junior Rachel Reis tied her career-best with a 9.850 and Nocella earned an identical score. The duo finished tied for second overall on the event. Ellingboe tabbed a 9.825, Feely a 9.800 and Goniwiecha continued her career day, tying her previous best of 9.725.
With momentum from the two previous events, Bowling Green set a school record on balance beam with a 49.200. Sophomore Laura Mitchell and Ellingboe both tied their career-highs with 9.900s, tying for first place overall on the apparatus. Feely bettered her career-high with a 9.825. Nocella also received a 9.825, as Heath rounded out the top five with a 9.750, tying her career-best.
The trend continued and Bowling Green set another season-high event score, earning a 49.225 on floor exercise. After five gymnasts from the lineup competed, the Falcons had already locked down a new school record, but after Nocella's 9.900 performance in the sixth slot, BGSU bettered its totaled for a 196.500. Fellow all-arounder Feely also recorded a 9.900 on the event, a new career-high. Freshmen Kayla Rose and Rachel Creagh also earned new career-bests with 9.875 and 9.750, respectively. Heath's 9.800 was also one of the top five scores from a Falcon on the apparatus.
Like vault, Feely and Nocella both tied for first place overall on floor. Rose earned a third-place tie thanks to her new personal best.
Bowling Green wrapped up its home slate for the 2016 season against NIU, with the meet serving as senior day for Ellingboe and Nocella.
"I can't say enough about Boe and Lys. They've been so dedicated to our program. They really stepped up and they competed aggressively. As a coach, that's what you hope for. I can't say enough about those two, I'm going to be heartbroken without them next year," said Turner.
The team now has a week off before the MAC Championships in Muncie, Ind. on March 19.
