BOWLING GREEN AT THE MAC CHAMPIONSHIPS
Last season, the team scored a 193.575 at the MAC Championships to place fifth of seven schools at Kent State's M.A.C. Center. Then-sophomore Lauren Feely, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, took home the co-vault championship by scoring a 9.900. It marked the third straight year that a Falcon has won the event, as Jamilah Ali won it in 2013 and Amanda Lievendag in 2014. Two years ago, BGSU scored a 194.625 and placed third, which was the program's best finish in 22 years.
HEAD COACH'S THOUGHTS
Kerrie Turner: "Coming off a record breaking competition, I am looking for our team to use the confidence gained from that meet but yet also look for places they can continue to make improvements for the MAC Championships. I spoke to the team last night about going into MACs determined and confident. It is also important that all the athletes do not make any changes to the normal mental and physical routine of meet day. This is one more opportunity to shine on the competition floor and it is as simple as that. In addition to our goal of competing successfully this Saturday, we also have an excellent opportunity to add one more regional qualifying score to help us achieve team qualification to the NCAA regional championships. As with all meets, wins and great scores are the results of excellent mind-sets and aggressive competition routines. The focus will be on hitting routines and staying together as a team. We can't wait for Saturday at 2:00pm!"
WHAT A WIN WOULD MEAN
*A win at the MAC Championships would be Bowling Green's first since 1985. The Falcons also placed first at the conference championships in 1982 and 1983.
*If the Falcons place second, it will be the program's best finish since the 1987 team also placed second.
*A third-place finish would be Bowling Green's third top-three finish over the last 25 years. The 2014 and 1991 teams both finished third.
RACE TO REGIONALS
With the top 36 schools earning a trip to the NCAA Regionals and the Falcons sitting at No. 37 entering the final week of the season, BGSU's hopes at earning a trip to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1991 are very much alive. Mathematically, there are 10 school fighting for seven spaces, and it will all be determined this Saturday at five conference meets: Mid-American Conference, Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference, East Atlantic Gymnastics League, Big 10 and Big 12. The teams in contention are, in order from 30-39, are Kent State, Brigham Young University, University of New Hampshire, NC State, Utah State, Central Michigan, Michigan State, BGSU, University of Maryland and Iowa State.
SCHOOL RECORDS FALL ON SENIOR DAY
The team set two school records in a win over Mid-American Conference foe Northern Illinois on Saturday. In front of a roaring crowd of 466 at Anderson Arena, the Falcons earned a 196.500 to NIU's 195.475, demolishing the previous school best of 196.100. The last time BGSU scored 49.000 pluses on all four events was back in 2005. In that meet, the team set what was then a school-record of 196.100. The Falcons' success showed on all four events, as the team recorded multiple 9.900s on one event on two separate occasions at the meet (beam, floor). This feat alone had yet to happen in the Turner era, and BGSU managed to accomplish this twice in one day. Individually, senior Alyssa Nocella won the all-around with a career-high 39.425 (9.850 vault, 9.850 bars, 9.825 beam, 9.900 floor). Junior Lauren Feely placed second, also earning a career-high. Her 39.375 was comprised of 9.850 vault, 9.800 bars, 9.825 beam and 9.900 floor scores.
