Falcons Begin Conference Play With Two Road Matches

Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University tennis team hits the road to begin Mid-American Conference play this weekend, facing Northern Illinois Friday and then Western Michigan Sunday. Both matches are set to start at 1 p.m.
The Falcons are coming off of a 4-3 victory against the Coyotes of South Dakota. Capturing the doubles point for BGSU were senior Drew Fillis and Paula Comella, along with sophomore Emily Witt and freshman Polina Radeva. Picking up wins in singles play were Radeva, Comella and Witt.
Radeva picked up the only win for the Orange and Brown against the Richmond Spiders. Radeva defeated Anna Abadias in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5.
Northern Illinois enters the weekend with an overall record of 5-7. The Huskies will play their first conference match against the Falcons Friday. Last season, head coach Tanya Gombera's team finished with records of 11-9 overall and 2-6 in the MAC. The returners for NIU are senior Cristina Alvarez and sophomores Abigail Dekkinga and Evelyn Youel. The Huskies are predicted to finish eighth in the MAC, according to the preseason poll. The Falcons lead Northern Illinois, 13-11, in the all-time series between the teams.
Western Michigan is 11-5 on the year and will travel Ball State Friday before hosting the Falcons Sunday. Ryan Tomlinson enters his first year as head coach for the Broncos after having been the associate and assistant coach under Betsy Kuhle who coached Western Michigan women's team for 33 years before retiring after the 2014-15 season. Returning to the roster for the Broncos are juniors Tracy Kuhle, Barbare Eristavi and Meika Ashby as well as two sophomores Ella Perinovic and Olivia Myers. Last year, WMU finished the season 15-8 overall record and 7-1 in the MAC. Western Michigan was voted to finish second in the league this spring by the MAC's head coaches.
Following this weekend's matches, the Falcons will head north to Toledo, Ohio for the Battle of I-75, April 1.
