Raleigh, N.C. – Redshirt junior Kayla Velasquez reached a Mid-American Conference automatic qualifying mark in the hammer throw as the Bowling Green State University track and field team concluded the opening weekend of the outdoor season at the Raleigh Relays Saturday.
Velasquez earned the team's fourth automatic qualifying mark of the weekend, all in field events. She threw the hammer 175-feet-10 to place eighth overall at the Raleigh Relays. Redshirt junior teammates Kori Reiser came up just shy of an auto mark as she threw 174-2 to place 10th. The duo each placed in the top nine at the MAC Championships in the event a year ago.
BGSU's 800 relay team cracked into the Falcon record book with the fourth-fastest time in the program history. Gabrielle Edwards, Cortisha Short, Taylor Rambo and Kera Lamotte ran the race in 1:39.20 to challenge the school record of 1:37.80 set in 2013. Rambo, in fact, was a member of the record-setting team three years ago.
Redshirt sophomore Rebecca Schott set a new personal best in the 10,000 with a time of 36:51.21. That time is 42 seconds faster than she ran at the MAC Championships a year ago.
BGSU's successful opening weekend included four MAC automatic qualifying marks, compared to one a year ago at the Raleigh Relays. The Falcons had a total of seven top-10 finishes and six more top-20 results at one of the largest and most prestigious meets of the weekend. Makenzie Wheat placed second in the shot put and Raven Porter was second in the long jump.
"We had a solid start to the outdoor season," BGSU Track and Field Coach Lou Snelling said. "We will look to build on this next week when we are back at home to try to win our dual meet against Toledo for the fourth straight year."
Bowling Green will host its only outdoor home meet of the season Friday as the Falcons compete with Toledo in the annual dual meet. Field events begin at Whittaker Track Complex at 3 pm and running events start at 4 pm.
