Bowling Green, Ohio – The BGSU women's golf team will return to the links this week, Apr. 1-2, at the EKU Colonel Classic hosted by Eastern Kentucky University at the par-72, 5,819-yards University Club at Arlington in Richmond, Kentucky.
This marks the eighth straight year and the 14th time overall in which the Falcons will compete at the annual EKU Colonel Classic tournament.
The 54-hole event will consist of 36 holes on Friday, Apr. 1, and a final 18 holes on Saturday, Apr. 2. The 2016 tournament field includes Austin Peay, Ball State, Belmont, Cleveland State, Dayton, IUPUI, Northern Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee Tech, BGSU and host EKU.
"We are looking forward to competing at EKU this week. The Arlington Golf Club has a long and rich history of supporting college golf events," commented head coach Stephanie Young. "The team will continue to draw confidence from the success this spring, but also maintain our focus of one round/one shot at a time."
Coming off a sixth-place team finish at the inaugural ORU/SFA Women's Spring Break Invite on Mar. 14-15, the Falcons will send out the same lineup this week in Lily Bartell, Erin Fahey, Hannah Lewis, Mikayla Baer and Fran Rodriguez.
Teeing-off for the Falcons at the No. 1 spot for the second straight tournament, Bartell led BGSU with a season-low 54-hole score of 222, +12, and a 12th-place finish last time out on Mar. 14-15 at the ORU/SFA Spring Break Invite. The senior leads the Falcons with a team-low season stroke average of 77.10 overall 21 rounds of play on the year. Bartell will be playing in her fourth EKU Colonel Classic this weekend where she has finished as high as fourth-place with a 36-hole score of 155, +11, at the 2014 Colonel Classic event.
Making her debut at the EKU Colonel Classic on Apr. 1-2, Fahey will play for the Falcons at the No. 2 position. The freshman is second on the team with a stroke average of 77.38 over seven events thus far this year, having played in all eight events for the Falcons on the year including the Women's Mid-American Match Play Challenge in early February. Fahey is coming off her best three-round performance of her young Falcon career, shooting rounds of 75, 74 and 75 for a 54-hole score of 223, +13, in Dallas, Texas to post a top-15 place finish at the ORU/SFA event.
Like her fellow classmate in Bartell, Lewis will be competing in her fourth straight Colonel Classic, teeing-off for the Falcons at the No. 3 slot. Lewis, who finished in a tie for 15th-place at the 2015 Cardinal Classic this past fall, has turned in back-to-back 54-hole scores of 234 in which one round has haunted the Falcon senior each time out over the last two tournaments. The Michigan native is third on the team with a season stroke average of 77.76 overall on the season. She is coming off rounds of 75, 76 and 83 at the ORU/SFA Spring Break Invitational in which she finished in 58th overall. Lewis' best finish at the EKU event came back in 2013, as she finished in a tie for 24th-place overall with rounds of 78, 78 and 77 for a three-round combined score of 233, +17, as a freshman.
Baer returns to the EKU Colonel Classic where last year she earned a spot on the EKU Classic All-Tournament Team with a third-place finish with a round of 75, +3, at the rain-shortened event on Apr. 3-4. Competing for the Falcons at the No. 4 spot, the junior carded a final round of 74, +4, overall over her final round of play at the ORU/SFA Spring Break Invite to place in a tie for 45th overall with her 54-hole score of 231, +21. Baer has tallied a stroke average of 77.81 overall on the season thus far.
Rounding out Coach Young's lineup for the second straight tournament is Rodriguez at the No. 5 position. Coming off a 54-hole score of 236, +26, at the ORU/SFA event three weeks ago, Rodriguez will look to build upon her two rounds of 76 over the three round tournament. The junior has recorded a stroke average of 79.11 thus far this season and has three top-25 finishes highlighted by a fifth-place showing at the 2015 Redbird Invitational last fall. At last year's rain-shortened Colonel Classic, Rodriguez turned in a round of 80 to place in a tie for 29th-place overall.
Playing as individuals at the two-day event are Miranda Dubler, Lauren Diehl and Madelynn Swank.
Dubler will be making her spring debut this week and will be competing in her third tournament on the year. This past fall season, the sophomore finished in 34th-place overall at the 2015 Rocket Classic with a 54-hole score of 241, +25, and placed in 69th at the 2015 MAC Fall Preview with a three-round combined score of 259, +43.
BGSU's Diehl will be teeing-off in her first tournament of the year this week at the Colonel Classic. The senior played in four events last year, shooting a 36-hole score of 164 at both the Golden Grizzlies Invitational and the Dolores Black Falcon Invitational in 2014-15.
Playing in her second tournament on the spring season this week, Swank will be competing for the first time as an individual this year having been in the lineup for the Falcons at the 2016 Rio Verde Invitational on Feb. 26-28. In her lone event this season, the sophomore carded rounds of 87, 76 and 77 to finish in a tie for 79th-place overall with a 54-hole score of 240, +24.
Last spring, the Falcons finished in a tie for fifth-place overall with a lone round team score of 314, +26, as the tournament was shortened to just one round due to rain and inclement weather throughout the two days of play.
BGSU finished in a tie for sixth in 2014 (643) over 36 holes and placed fourth overall in 2013 (924) in 54 holes of play.
Play will begin on Friday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
Live scoring will be available at www.Golfstat.com.
