Redshirt soph's four extra-base hits lead BG offensive onslaught
Redshirt sophomore Chelsea Raker paced a potent Bowling Green State University softball attack, as the Falcons drubbed Morgan State University, 11-2, Saturday afternoon (March 5). The game was part of the Tiger Clash, hosted by Towson University at the TU Softball Complex.
BGSU, now 6-8 on the season, spotted the Bears an early 2-0 lead, then exploded for back-to-back-to-back home runs en route to a five-run third inning. The Falcons added four more runs in the sixth and two in the seventh.

Raker was a perfect 4-for-4, with all four hits going for extra bases, in the win. She had two doubles, a triple and a home run. As a team, the Falcons pounded out 15 hits, including 10 extra-base knocks. Raker's homer was one of four by BG in the victory.
Raker had a slugging percentage of 2.750 on the day, and reached base in all five plate appearances, with a walk. She scored a run and drove in two.
The top-four batters in the order -- senior Marina Cobbs, junior Aspen Searle, Raker and senior Marisa Shook -- combined to go 12-for-19 at the plate on the day. All four players homered in the win.
"Our offense was able to put together some big innings to supply the win today," said first-year Falcon head coach Sarah Willis. "The top of the lineup was clutch for us. Aspen, Chelsea and Marisa all had at least one extra-base hit, and Marina hit the first home run of her collegiate career."
Both Searle and Shook were 3-for-5 against the Bears. Searle had a double and a homer, scoring three runs and driving in three. Shook's three hits included her team-leading seventh round-tripper of the year. She had a pair of RBI.
Cobbs went 2-for-5 at the plate, with the first homer of her collegiate career and four RBI.
BG's 15 hits included five doubles, a triple and the four homers.
In the circle, freshman Kiley Sosby fired a complete-game three-hitter. She allowed a two-run homer in the first, but bounced back to keep the Bears off of the scoreboard the rest of the way.
Sosby allowed just one hit over the final five innings, and needed a total of just 73 pitches in the win. She threw 48 strikes among those 73 pitches.
MSU starting pitcher Allison Hartman kept the Falcons off of the board for the first two innings. She allowed a two-out double to Raker in the first, and a leadoff double to junior Haley Schrock in the second, but both runners were stranded at second.
Meanwhile, the Bears got on the board in the bottom of the first. Damali Young drew a leadoff walk, and after Sosby got a strikeout and a grounder back to the circle, Audrianna Alvarez homered to put MSU on top.
In the home half of the second, MSU's Briana Jones led off with a single, and advanced to third with no outs after a pair of wild pitches. But, Sosby got two strikeouts and a popup to strand Jones at third.
BGSU exploded for five runs in the third. Senior Molly Holliday walked, then proceeded to steal both second and third. Holliday had three stolen bases on the day.
Cobbs singled to plate Holliday with the game's first run, and two pitches later, Cobbs trotted home when Searle homered to center to give the Brown and Orange a 3-2 lead. For Searle, the round-tripper was her first of the season and the 13th of her BGSU career.
Raker followed with a blast to left on an 0-2 pitch, for her second homer of the year and the ninth of her BG tenure. Then, Shook, who homered three times in her first three years as a Falcon, hit a shot to left for her seventh of the season.
Sosby retired the Bears in order in the third, and worked around a leadoff walk in the fourth. After a sacrifice bunt advanced the runner to second, Sosby got Jones to hit a grounder back to the circle, then struck out Nichol VanDenBerg for the third out.
The Falcon fifth saw Raker lead off with a double, and Shook got aboard on an infield hit. The runners moved up a base on a groundout to second, but Hartman escaped the jam by getting a fly ball to center.
Caitlyn Williams doubled with one out in the bottom of the fifth, for Morgan State's only hit over the last five innings. But, Sosby then struck out both Young and Korynna Lara. And, BG put the game away in the top of the sixth.
Junior Trista Mokienko began the inning with a double to left-center. Erica Hawkins replaced Hartman, but was greeted by a Holliday single that put runners at the corners. Holliday stole second -- her third steal of the game -- and both Mokienko and Holliday came home on Cobbs' first collegiate homer, a three-run shot that gave BG an 8-2 lead.
Searle followed with a double, and after Raker walked, Shook singled to score Searle with the Falcons' ninth run. Victoria Propst entered the circle and retired the next three batters, but the damage had been done.
After Sosby worked a one-two-three half-inning, the Falcons went back to work in the seventh. Mokienko led off for the second-straight inning and drew a walk. She took second on a grounder, and scored on a two-out single off the bat of Searle. Then, Raker ripped a triple to right-center to score Searle.
Sosby got a weak grounder, a strikeout and a popup back toward the circle in the seventh, and the Falcons had the win. Sosby improved to 4-3 on the year, firing her third complete game. She walked two batters and struck out a BGSU season-high eight.
Hartman, the first of three MSU hurlers, took the loss. She allowed six runs on nine hits before leaving in the sixth. Hawkins did not record an out, allowing four hits and a walk. Propst gave up two runs and two hits in her two innings of work.
"It was great that we rallied after falling behind early today," said Willis. "Moving forward, though, we need to figure out how to press teams early at the plate. We are waiting too long to get on the board. And, our pitching staff needs to come out firing. We have not been bringing our best stuff in the first inning, but I am confident that we can sharpen our focus and bring a sense of urgency from here on out."
