BGSU begins eight-game road swing with weekend series at Buffalo
Miami University scored three times in the first inning to take the lead for good, and the RedHawks went on to down the Bowling Green State University softball team, 6-0, Wednesday afternoon (April 13). The Mid-American Conference game was held at Meserve Field.
The league-leading RedHawks (23-14, 8-2 MAC) got a three-run homer off the bat of Lauren Anderson in the first inning, and scored three more times in the third. That was more than enough run support for Amber Logemann, who threw a complete-game three-hit shutout for the visitors.

Miami got on the board when Taylor Shuey and Johniann Wahl drew back-to-back walks with one out in the top of the first, and Anderson followed with a long homer to left.
"Obviously, allowing an opponent to put together a big first inning can be hard to come back from," said BGSU coach Sarah Willis. "Our team's inability to be consistent hurt us today."
The RedHawks loaded the bases with two down in the second, on a BG error with two outs followed by a Shuey single and another walk to Wahl. But, BG starter Braiden Dillow got Anderson to hit a soft liner toward shortstop Katee Hinkle, and the sophomore took several steps to her right and snagged the ball for the third out.
Meanwhile, after being retired in order in the bottom of the first, the Falcons (16-24, 4-7 MAC) put a pair of runners aboard in the second. After Logemann retired the first two batters of the half-inning, Dillow's blooper landed just inside the third-base line on the grass behind the bag. Then, a grounder by sophomore Morgan Evangelista was misplayed by Miami second baseman Hannah Girlie, allowing Dillow to advance to second base ahead of a tag attempt at the bag. But, Logemann bounced back to get an inning-ending strikeout, one of her nine K's on the day.
And, in the top of the third, the RedHawks doubled the lead. Girlie led off with a single, and Hailey Reed's liner toward the gap in right-center was just out of the reach of a diving Molly Holliday. Reed wound up with an RBI triple, and one out later, she scored on a bloop single by Rylee Whispel.
With two outs in the inning, Michaela Schlattman singled, and Shuey followed with a line drive that hit off the fence in left field for a run-scoring double.
Falcon freshman Kiley Sosby entered the circle to begin the fourth and pitched four innings of scoreless, one-hit ball. She walked two batters and struck out three, facing just four hitters over the minimum.
But, BG could get only two baserunners over the final five innings. Sophomore Kayla Gregory doubled down the left-field line in the third inning, and senior Marina Cobbs beat out a roller to shortstop for a fifth-inning single. But, on each occasion, Logemann retired the next two Falcons to end the inning.
Logemann, as mentioned, struck out nine. She did not walk a batter, facing just four hitters over the minimum. She picked up the win to improve to 15-7 on the year.
Dillow, who pitched the first three innings, took the loss to fall to 4-7.
"Dillow struggled early, and the walks hurt as they contributed to the three-run first inning that Miami was able to put together," said Willis. "Kiley Sosby did a great job coming in and shutting down their offense. The defense played good ball behind her, but she got a lot of 'getable' outs for our defense, and did a great job of improving from the last time she faced Miami to this time.
"But, certainly, it's all about our team finding a way to be consistent."
The Falcons participated in Go4theGoal's "Laced Up" event on Wednesday. The players wore gold shoelaces to help raise awareness and support local children fighting pediatric cancer. Go4theGoal is a Cherry Hill, N.J., base non-profit foundation dedicated to helping kids with cancer.
The Falcons now hit the road for the next eight games, beginning with a weekend series at Buffalo. The teams are scheduled to play a Friday (April 15) single game and a Saturday (April 16) doubleheader in Western New York.
