Falcons Face RedHawks, Cardinals This Weekend

Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University tennis team continues conference play against Miami Friday in Oxford at 1 p.m. The Falcons return home Sunday to face Ball State at Keefe Courts on the BG campus at 1 p.m. In the event of inclement weather, Sunday's match will be held indoors at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.
Last time out the Falcons lost a close match to Eastern Michigan, 4-3 at the Perrysburg Tennis Center. Picking up points for the Orange and Brown were senior Drew Fillis and freshmen Paula Comella and Polina Radeva. The No. 1, 2 and 3 singles matches resulted in super tiebreakers. Playing No. 1 for the Falcons was Comella, who beat Klara Supejova, 7-6 (1), 6-7 (3), 1-0 (10-8). Radeva took down Andrea Martinovska at the No. 2 spot, 7-5, 5-7, 1-0 (10-7) and Fillis at the No. 3 position defeated Ani Gogvadze, 6-4, 1-6, 1-0 (10-4).
Miami, the defending Mid-American Conference champions and preseason favorites, enters the weekend with an overall record of 8-9, and the RedHawks are 3-1 in conference play. Miami has defeated Toledo (6-1), Buffalo (5-2) and Akron (5-2). The RedHawks have suffered one loss to Ball State (4-3). Miami's seven returners are senior Ana Rajkovic, junior Andrea Badileanu and sophomores Alena Mayevskaya, Nelli Ponomareva, Erin Rodriguez, Hannah Shteyn and Anastasiia Vasiukhina. Miami leads BG, 40-5, in the all-time series between the teams. Last year, head coach Yana S. Carollo's team finished the 2015 season with a 16-7 overall record and 8-0 in the MAC.
Ball State is 18-3 on the year. The Cardinals began the 2016 season with a 5-0 record, before suffering a 4-3 loss to Buffalo Sunday. Ball State has defeated Western Michigan (4-3), Northern Illinois (5-2), Miami (4-3), Eastern Michigan (5-2) and Akron (4-3). Following the match against the Falcons, Ball State will close out the regular season against Toledo at home. Head coach Max Norris returns three to his roster in senior Bethany Moore and juniors Rosalinda Calderon and Toni Ormond. Ball State was predicted to finish fourth in the league, according to the preseason poll. The Falcons lead the Cardinals, 20-18, in the all-time series between the teams. Last year, Ball State went 17-6 overall and 5-3 in MAC play.
Last year, both Miami and Ball State excelled at the MAC Championship. No. 3 Ball State made their way to the championship by defeating Buffalo, 4-0 in the first round and Western Michigan, 4-2 in the semifinal match. No. 1 Miami beat Eastern Michigan, 4-1 in the semifinals to reach the championship match. The RedHawks claimed victory over the Cardinals in the championship, 4-0.
Following this weekend's matches, BGSU will end the regular season with two home matches against Akron (April 22) and Buffalo (April 24). Both matches are set to begin at 1 p.m.
