Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University Swimming and Diving program held its annual Awards Banquet Sunday morning, which was held in the Ballroom of the Bowen Thompson Student Union. Numerous team members were recognized with awards, as head coach Matt Ense highlighted the teams' successful and record setting season.
After brunch was served, Ense introduced the freshman and sophomores and had an opportunity to speak about their thoughts on the season. The team's eight seniors spoke about their memories made at BGSU and what their future holds for them. Assistant Coach Jaclyn Rosen and Dive Coach Alex Gauvin joined Ense in the presentation of awards.
The awards began with naming the 2016 Academic All-MAC team, Distinguished Scholar Athletes, the Commissioner's Award and the 4.0 Crew. Senior Alexandra Poitinger earned the Philanthropist Award, which represented her service and dedication to the program by going above and beyond what is expected. Freshman Mary Edwards was named Most Improved by distinguishing herself away from the group. Senior diver Rachel Perry was given the Mary Pfeiffer Diving Award, which represented how she faces her fears on a daily basis and conquers them every day at practice.
Senior Daniela Carrillo was named MVP, due to her 174 MAC points, 30 individual wins, 446 individual dual points, and being only the sixth swimmer to ever qualify to the NCAA National Championship in BGSU history. Senior Kayla Effinger earned the Academic Achievement Award, which was re-named the Steve and Rhonda Melchi Award, for her academic excellence in the classroom. Senior Jordan Bullock closed out the awards by earning the Falcon Pride Award, which was re-named the Bull Award. This award represented Bullock's fierce aggressiveness, powerful presence and outstanding work ethic. Â
BGSU Swim and Dive capped off their successful season with an NCAA qualification, third place finish at the MAC Championship, and by breaking 10 school records in swimming and one in diving. They finished with a dual meet record of 6-2, and beat Miami after not seeing a win over them since 1989. The Falcons left Cooper Pool with an undefeated 4-0 record, with five swimmers making B cut times, putting them in contention to become an Academic All-American.
