The Golden Flashes homered three times in that opening inning, with Arika Roush hitting two of them. KSU pitcher Ronnie Ladines aided her own cause with a grand slam.
In the circle, Ladines gave up five hits in earning a complete-game shutout. BGSU put the leadoff runner on base in three of the first four innings, and the Falcons had at least one baserunner in each of the five frames, but Ladines allowed only one runner as far as third base on the afternoon.
Roush led off the game with a solo homer, and after BG starter Braiden Dillow struck out Michele Duffy, Maddy Grimm singled to centerfield, and Holly Speers and Shelbi Tilton each reached on bloop singles that loaded the bases. Then, Ladines homered to left to give the Flashes a five-run lead.
Bailey Brownfield reached base when her seeing-eye roller found its way through the right side of the infield, and after Emily Dobbin popped up on a failed sacrifice bunt attempt for the second out, Kiley Harrison walked, and Roush homered for the second time in the inning.
Dillow gave up only four hits the rest of the way, but the damage had been done.
"They have some very good hitters on their team, and they came out swinging and swinging hard," said BGSU head coach Sarah Willis. "It's tough to come back after an inning like that.
"Braiden did a nice job of collecting herself after that first inning, which is good because we are going to need her tomorrow."
Falcon senior Molly Holliday led the Falcons at the plate, going 2-for-3. Holliday reached base in all three plate appearances on Friday. Dillow had a double, while senior Marisa Shook and sophomore Katee Hinkle, like Dillow, each were 1-for-2.
"Offensively, I thought we showed a lot of heart and fight," said Willis. "We put runners on base in every inning, and we are more than capable of pushing a run through. I think if we can tighten things up defensively, take some pressure off of our offense, it will allow us to stay that much more relaxed."
Holliday led off the bottom of the first inning with a single through the left side, and Dillow began the BG second by lining a ball over the leftfieler's head for a double. But, in each case, Ladines retired the next three batters.
Holliday reached base on a KSU error in the third, advancing to second when Ladines's throw was off target. And, Holliday took third base on a grounder, but Ladines got an inning-ending strikeout to keep her shutout intact. Shook singled on the first pitch of the BG fourth, but the next three Falcons were retired.
The Flashes added a run in the top of the fifth. Tilton led off with a walk, and a double to left-center by Ladines sent pinch-runner Sydney Anderson to third base. From there, Anderson tagged and scored on a soft liner to left off the bat of Brownfield.
In the BG fifth, the Falcons put two runners on base for the first time in the game, as Hinkle and Holliday had back-to-back one-out singles. But, Ladines got a strikeout for the second out. Then, redshirt sophomore Chelsea Raker had two hard-hit balls -- one a drive that had home-run distance to left, and one a liner the opposite way past first base -- but both were foul. Ladines finally retired Raker to end the game.
Roush and Ladines each drove in four runs in the win. Roush was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Ladines was 2-of-3. Brownfield went 2-for-2 for the visitors.
Ladines threw 57 of her 75 pitches for strikes in the win. She struck out eight and did not walk a batter.
"We know we're going to see their number-one pitcher again tomorrow, so we need to stick with the adjustments we made today," said Willis. "We got progressively better as today's game went on, and we need to continue to do that. We need to come out here tomorrow, narrow our focus and make sure that we are ready to go from inning one."
The Falcons and Golden Flashes will conclude their three-game weekend series with a doubleheader on Saturday (April 30). Due to the forecast of rain on Saturday afternoon & evening, the starting time for the twinbill has been moved up an hour. Game one will begin at 12:00 p.m. at Meserve Field.
