Toledo, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University track and field team sits in seventh place after a rain-shortened day one at the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by the University of Toledo. The Falcons earned all of their points in the hammer throw on the opening day.
Â
Kent State leads with 31 points and Akron sits second with 27. Ohio (16) and Central Michigan (15) sit in third and fourth, while Eastern Michigan and Miami have 10 points apiece. BGSU posted seven points and Ball State recorded one. Four teams, including Toledo, Western Michigan, Buffalo and Northern Illinois, are yet to crack the scoring column.
Â
The day began with the hammer throw and the Falcons posted a personal best and a season best as Kayla Velasquez and Kori Reiser ended fifth and sixth, respectively. Velasquez, who entered the meet seeded fifth, threw a personal best 186-feet-6.5. Kori Reiser, who was seeded ninth, followed with a season-best 180-3.75 to place sixth. Freshman Allie Farmer added a 14th place finish at 161-1.25.
Â
"My first throw was a little rocky," Velasquez said. "My second throw was my best. Hammer has always been a big deal at BG, so we carry that on our shoulders."
Â
The only event that was completed in which a Bowling Green student-athlete competed was the discus. Freshman Andrea Weirauch finished her first collegiate season with a 16th place finish at 102-8.5.
Â
The Falcons were poised for a big night in the 10,000 with three entrants. Rachel Walny sat in third place through six laps, while Rebecca Schott and Mackenzie McMillin sat in striking distance, but lightning stopped the race. It will restart Friday morning at 8:30 am.
Â
Bowling Green will have a full day of competition Friday at Toledo with trails taking place in the 100, 200, 400, 1500 and 400 hurdles. As well, the shot put, long jump and steeplechase will be contested on day two of the MAC Championships.
