Toledo, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University Track and Field team begins the postseason Thursday as the Falcons will take part in the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by the University of Toledo. The three-day meet begins Thursday and the Falcons look to improve on last year's ninth-place finish and 48 team points.
Â
The top 20 entrants in each event will compete at the MAC Championships this weekend and the top eight finishers in each event will score points for their team in 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 format. Based on seeding, the Falcons' best chance to earn copious amounts of points comes in the shot put, where Aliyah Gustafson is seeded first and Makenzie Wheat is third.
Â
There are eight events in which the Falcons have three of the top 20 entrants and BGSU has two ranked among the top 10 in both the hammer throw and the triple jump. The hammer throw kicks off the event Thursday at 10 am and BGSU has produced the MAC Champion in that event in each of the past three years. While three-time defending champion Brooke Pleger is now an assistant coach on staff, Kayla Velasquez is ranked fifth and Kori Reiser is ninth.
Â
Following the MAC Championships, the top 48 individuals in the region in each event will advance to the NCAA East Region Preliminary Round. Regional rankings are best on each student-athlete's best result throughout the course of the regular season and the league championship. The Falcons currently are in line to qualify for regionals four times. The NCAA East Regional takes place May 26-28 in Jacksonville, Fla.
