Lexington, Kentucky – For the 16th consecutive year, the Bowling Green State University volleyball team has been recognized by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) for academic excellence with the AVCA Team Academic Award. A record 762 college and high school teams were recognized by the AVCA in 2015-16. This number breaks the previous year's total of 752 and sets a new all-time high for this award. The AVCA recognizes volleyball programs across the country that maintains a team GPA of 3.30 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
"We are honored and proud to earn the AVCA Team Academic Award for a 16th straight year. This speaks volumes about the quality of student-athletes that we recruit for our program and their commitment to academic excellence," stated Coach Tomic. "Our goal is not just to graduate every student-athlete, but to help them become lifelong learners who strive for excellence in everything they do. The credit also goes to Student-Athlete Services and other BGSU faculty and staff who play an important role in our team's academic successes."
The BGSU volleyball team earned a 3.56 GPA for the year. A total of eight student-athletes earned a 3.0 grade point average or higher over the fall semester, while 13 student-athletes posted a 3.0 grade point average or higher in the spring semester. Six Falcons recorded a perfect 4.0 grade point average in the fall semester, while four student-athletes tallied a perfect 4.0 grade point average in the spring semester.
Bowling Green is in elite company in terms of the longest active streaks among all NCAA Division I volleyball programs. Only Indiana State University has been honored annually for a longer period, having received the award for 18 consecutive seasons. The AVCA instituted the award for the 1992-93 season.
"Congratulations to the coaches and institutions that won the 2016 AVCA Team Academic Award," said AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer. "It is no accident that a volleyball coaches association recognizes academic excellence as a team, rather than an individual, achievement. Players influence each other, both in execution on the court and discipline in the classroom."
The 2015-16 recognition marks the 17th time in the 24-year history of the award that the Falcons have been honored for academic excellence by the AVCA. Over 1,000 different schools have earned the award in the program's history, with exactly 7,640 awards being given out in total.
