The BGSU swimming & diving team got their season started Friday evening with their orange & brown scrimmage. The orange team came out on top 154-153.
The orange team, led by seniors Maya Skorupski and Hannah Albion, won a total of six individual events and two relays, scoring a total of 154 points. On the other hand, this year's brown team, led by seniors Kristin Filby, Victoria Griffin and Anna Babinec, won a total of nine individual events, scoring a total of 153 points. While the brown team was able to claim the win on more events, the orange team got their hands to the wall first on both relays, which overall earned them more points.
Freshmen making an impact
Talisa Lemke dove into her freshman year this evening, making a huge splash into the season. Originally from Germany, Lemke claimed the win in both the 3 meter and 1 meter diving events, as well the specially created 25 yard freestyle event, which was exclusive for divers. The freshman claimed the win on the 3 meter diving event by scoring a total of 187.05 points. Later on, she achieved the number one spot on the 1 meter diving event with a total of 138.15 points. Winning what some people referred to as "the main event of the evening", Lemke stopped the clock at 14.67 in the 25 yard freestyle event to finalize her competition for the evening.
Danica Garbett, a native from Canada, was the first one to get her hand on the wall in the 200 butterfly, stopping the clock at 2:11.36. The freshman fell short, however, when it came to 200 IM, finishing second to senior Kristin Filby. Garbett stopped the clock at 2:10.63, less than a second behind her teammate. Garbett got back on track when the time for the 100 IM arrived. The 5'8" individual medley specialist came out on top by stopping the clock at an impressive 1:02.02, more than three seconds ahead of the rest of the field.
One could feel the excitement at Cooper when freshman Rachel Resch broke the one-minute mark in the 100 butterfly. The freshman stopped the clock at 59.73, almost a second ahead of the rest of the field. Originally from Wisconsin, the 5'6" freshman also led the "B" relay for the orange team in the 200 freestyle event. Resch, along with her teammates, stopped the clock at 1:45.30.

A good start to the season
Only three weeks into training mode, the falcons were able to perform some impressive swims and dives. After the meet was over, coach Matt Ense took the time explain how "this is a learning experience, this is our quiz before the final exam at the end of the year". Coach Ense is starting his second season as the head coach of the BGSU swimming and diving program. Coach Ense also made a point in regards of being only three weeks into training before the season starts by saying "we are really working on our efficiency right now and then the horse power and everything else will come later".
The BGSU women's swimming and diving team will make their next splash during the evening of Sept. 30 at Cooper Pool, hosting the annual Tom Stubbs relay meet, which will start at 4:00 PM. The current falcons will welcome back former BGSU swimmers and divers the very next day for their annual Jean Campbell annual meet. Former falcons will have the opportunity to race the current BGSU team in a series of events, including relays and 1 meter diving. The falcons hope to see you back at Cooper pool to cheer them on as they take on the 2016-17 season.
