A FEW LATE-BREAKING NOTES
• BGSU is off to a 3-0-0 start on the young season. This marks the third-straight season that the Falcons have won the first three matches. Last year's team got off to a 5-0-0 start. The school record for most wins to start a year is six, by the 1978 club.
• The Falcons opened the season with a 4-0 win over IUPUI at Cochrane Stadium on Aug. 26. Then, BGSU rallied from an early deficit for a 3-1 win over visiting Appalachian State on Aug. 28. Friday night (Sept. 2), the Brown and Orange downed Marshall by a 3-0 count.
• The Falcons are – obviously – 3-0-0 when scoring two or more goals this season. BGSU is 11-0-1 in such matches since the start of the 2015 season, and the Falcons are now 41-4-5 when scoring at least two goals in the Eric Nichols Era.
• BGSU has scored 10 goals through the first three matches. Seven different players have scored at least one goal this season.
• The Falcons have scored three or more goals in each of this year's three matches to date. BG has scored at least three goals in three-straight games for the first time in almost two decades. The 1997 team scored three or more goals in seven consecutive matches from Oct. 12 to Nov. 6. That '97 club advanced to the NCAA Championships.
• Senior Pat Flynn is one of three Falcons with two goals, and he leads the team with seven points on the year. Flynn is ranked second nationally among active players in career goals per game (0.66) and points per game (1.58). He trails only Winthrop's Max Hasenstab on both lists.
• BGSU is ranked sixth in the Great Lakes Region in the latest NSCAA ratings. The Falcons are sixth in the region for the second-straight week.
• The Falcons received votes in this week's College Soccer News top-30 national poll.
• While BGSU has scored 10 goals in this year's three matches, Cleveland State has allowed only five goals in its past 11 matches dating to last season
SCOUTING CLEVELAND STATE
Cleveland State is off to a 2-1-0 start to the season, and the Vikings scored seven goals in their first two matches, downing Dayton, 3-0, at home before stopping Robert Morris, 4-2, on the road. Last weekend, CSU dropped a narrow 1-0 decision on the road against nationally-ranked Wake Forest. Freshman Gabriel Pewu has five points on the year, and was named the Horizon League Player of the Week last week. while classmate Lawrence Karpeh has four points. Senior Aleksander Drobac made seven stops at Wake Forest. He leads the Horizon League in both goals-against average (0.51) and save percentage (.909) after pacing the league in both of those categories in 2015. CSU was picked to finish fifth in the HL in the 2016 preseason coaches poll. Head coach Ali Kazemaini welcomed back 16 players from last season, including 10 that played in at least 16 games a year ago. The 2015 Vikings went 9-8-2 overall and 4-3-2 in conference play.
THE SERIES
The Falcons and Cleveland State are tied, 15-15-1, in the all-time series, and BGSU has won the last two matchups. Last season, Pat Flynn had two goals and an assist as the Falcons downed the Vikings, 3-0, at Cochrane Stadium. Joe Sullivan added the other BG goal. Two years ago, in the last meeting at Krenzler Field, Jacob Roth scored on a free kick in overtime to give the Brown and Orange a 1-0 win in his hometown. CSU's last series win came in double-OT at Cochrane in 2013. BGSU is 9-7-0 at home and 6-8-1 on the road vs. the Vikings.
UP NEXT FOR THE FALCONS
Following the Cleveland State match, the Falcons will head to Western Illinois for a contest on Saturday, Sept. 10. Then, BGSU will return home to face Wright State in the teams' annual battle for the I-75 Cup. The Falcons and Raiders will meet on Tuesday, Sept. 13, at Cochrane Stadium, and admission is free.
