NOTE OF THE DAY
>> The 2016-17 season marks only the second year in which NCAA women's basketball has utilized the four-quarter format. Nevertheless ...Â
>> Heading into Saturday's Central Michigan game, the BGSU record for points in a quarter by an individual was 12, by Miriam Justinger in last year's win over Illinois State. On Saturday, Sydney Lambert set a new record with 14 points in the first quarter against CMU.
>> Lambert had 14 points in that quarter, going 5-for-5 from the field, including a 4-for-4 long-range performance.
>> Lambert's record, however, lasted only until the fourth quarter, when Carly Santoro scored 15 points vs. the Chippewas.
A TRADITION OF SUCCESS
Bowling Green has won 14 MAC regular-season championships and 11 league tournament titles, the highest totals among all conference teams. Prior to the injury-plagued season of 2014-15, the Falcons had won at least 20 games in a MAC-record 11 consecutive seasons. BG won at least 24 games in nine-straight seasons during that span, losing just 18 total games in MAC regular-season play during those nine years.
The Falcons made 10 consecutive national postseason trips from 2005-14, with five NCAA Championships appearances and five trips to the WNIT during that time. The 2006-07 team was the most successful in MAC history, winning a league-record 31 games en route to an NCAA 'Sweet Sixteen' appearance.
Overall, BGSU has won 20 or more games 19 times, the highest total among all Mid-American Conference women's basketball-playing institutions.
SCOUTING THE BULLS
Buffalo enters Wednesday's game with an overall record of 12-4, and the Bulls are 2-3 in MAC play. UB opened the season with 10 consecutive wins, but the Bulls have dropped four of six games since that time. The team's two wins during the recent stretch both came over Miami, including a 68-51 road win on Saturday. That victory broke a three-game losing streak. Senior guard JoAnna Smith is the lone player scoring in double digits, but three of her teammates have at least 7.5 points per game. Smith has 14.3 ppg and has made a team-leading 36 three-point field goals. Junior center Cassie Oursler and junior guard Stephanie Reid have 9.0 and 8.7 ppg, respectively, with Reid averaging 6.6 assists and 2.0 steals per game. Freshman forward Summer Hemphill has 7.5 ppg and a UB-best 7.5 rebounds per outing. The Bulls are 8-1 at home, 4-2 on the road and 0-1 in neutral sites. In league play, UB is 1-1 at home and 1-2 on the road. The Bulls lead the MAC in rebounding offense, rebounding defense and – not surprisingly – rebounding margin (+11.6). Head coach Felisha Legette-Jack welcomed back 10 letterwinners, including all five starters, from a year ago. Last year's UB team went 20-14 overall and 8-10 in MAC play. The 2015-16 Bulls, seeded eighth for the MAC Tournament, won the tourney title and advanced to the NCAA Championships.
THE SERIES
The Falcons lead Buffalo, 24-10, in the all-time series, but the Bulls have won five-straight meetings, including three matchups last season. The teams met three times in a 24-day span last year. UB topped the Falcons by a 63-50 count at the Stroh Center (Feb. 13, 2016), then escaped with a 55-52 victory in the return match inside Alumni Arena (Feb. 24, 2016). BG went back to Buffalo for the first round of the MAC Tournament, with the Bulls emerging victorioius, 60-44 (March 7, 2016). The Falcons had won 20 consecutive meetings vs. the Bulls prior to UB's current five-game streak. The Bulls had not defeated the Brown and Orange since February of 2003. BGSU is 11-4 in home games, 12-6 on the road and 1-0 at neutral sites vs. UB over the years. Jennifer Roos is 4-5 against the Bulls as a collegiate head coach.
UP NEXT
Following the UB game, the Falcons will conclude a three-game homestand with a Saturday (Jan. 21) game vs. Ball State University. The game begins at 12:00 p.m., and kicks off a second-straight Saturday doubleheader at the Stroh Center. The BGÂ men's team also will face BSU, with the men's contest slated to begin at 2:30 p.m. Following Saturday's action, the BGSU women will hit the road for games at Eastern Michigan (Jan. 25) and Kent State (Jan. 28).
