Bowling Green, Ohio – Redshirt junior Aliyah Gustafson broke the school record in the indoor shot put and the Bowling Green State University track and field team won six events at the Tom Wright Classic Friday evening, on the campus of BGSU. The meet served as the team's Senior Night, honoring 10 Falcons competing in their final home meet of their careers.
Â
Gustafson's second attempt was the record breaker in the shot put as she threw 52-feet-10 (16.10m) to break the previous school record by nine inches. Her toss helped spark the Falcons to a big performance in the event. Purdue transfer Elizabeth Iversen set a new personal best with a throw of 50-0 (15.24m) to place second. Makenzie Wheat, who had held the school record since 2015, had a season-best distance of 49-11.75 (15.23m) to finish third.
Â
With the throw, Gustafson ranks 13th in the country in the shot put. The top 16 in the country advance to the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field National Championships. Gustafson advanced to the outdoor national championships, a field of 24 competitors, one year ago after winning the MAC Championship in the shot put. Gustafson, Iversen and Wheat rank among the top four student-athletes in the MAC in the event currently.
Â
"Obviously, this sets Aliyah up well," BGSU Track and Field Coach Lou Snelling said. "It puts her in the mix to win another MAC title. She's well ahead of where she was last year and we feel great about that, considering where she got to. Where our throwers are sitting in weight and shot right now, they are going to be a huge part of our success at the MAC Championships. We don't want to put too much pressure on them, but they know and understand that."
Â
BGSU also swept the top three spots in three other events on the evening. Dorresha Green paced the team with a time of 25.75 seconds and Brianna Johnson and Gabrielle Edwards followed in second and third. In the 400, Johnson took her turn by winning with a time of 1:00.02. Brianna Tidmore and Edwards were second and third.
Â
The Falcons also took the top three spots in the mile. Rachel Walny, who placed second at the MAC Cross Country Championships in the fall, paced the field with a time of 5:08.43. Becca Rae and Rebecca Schott followed Walny across the finish line.
Â
In the weight throw, BGSU took the top two spots as Kayla Velasquez threw 59-9. Iversen was second in that event at 59-2.75. Kaila Butler was fourth at 55-2.25 and Gustafson finished fifth at 54-9.25.
Â
Bowling Green picked up one other first-place finish as Chasatea Brown ran a personal best 9.25 seconds in the 60 hurdles. BeJai Fray tied for second in that event with a time of 9.29 seconds, also a new PR.
Â
Senior Raven Porter picked up a pair of runner-up finishes, doing so in both the high jump and long jump.
Â
Bowling Green will return to action next weekend, splitting the squad between two meets. The Falcons will compete at the Findlay Classic and Elite Throws, as well as the Thundering Herd Invitational hosted by Marshall.
