NOTE OF THE DAY
The Falcons struggled to get to the free-throw line last season, but BGSU has improved immensely in that department this winter to date.
Last season, the Falcons averaged 9.8 free throws made and 14.2 attempted. This year, BGSU is averaging 13.9 free throws made and 20.5 attempted per contest.
The Falcons had more than 20 FTA just three times in 28 games last year, with a season-high total of 28. This year, BG has shot over 20 free throws five times in 13 games. That includes four games with 30 or more FTA.
BG has shot 30 or more free throws three times in the last five games, including in each of the last two contests. BG is averaging 32.0 FTA in the last two games.
A TRADITION OF SUCCESS
Bowling Green has won 14 MAC regular-season championships and 11 league tournament titles, the highest totals among all conference teams. Prior to the injury-plagued season of 2014-15, the Falcons had won at least 20 games in a MAC-record 11 consecutive seasons. BG won at least 24 games in nine-straight seasons during that span, losing just 18 total games in MAC regular-season play during those nine years.
The Falcons made 10 consecutive national postseason trips from 2005-14, with five NCAA Championships appearances and five trips to the WNIT during that time. The 2006-07 team was the most successful in MAC history, winning a league-record 31 games en route to an NCAA 'Sweet Sixteen' appearance.
Overall, BGSU has won 20 or more games 19 times, the highest total among all Mid-American Conference women's basketball-playing institutions.
SCOUTING NIU
Northern Illinois enters Wednesday's game with an overall record of 8-4, and the Huskies are off to a 1-0 start in MAC play after an 85-73 home win over Eastern Michigan on Saturday. NIU is currently second in the entire nation in scoring offense, with 91.0 points per game, but the Huskies are ranked 342nd of 344 teams in scoring defense. NIU has allowed 81.2 ppg. Northern is ranked among the country's top-25 teams in eight total categories. Three Huskies are averaging over 17 points per game, including sophomore G/F Courtney Woods (17.8 ppg), fifth-year senior forward Cassidy Glenn (17.4 ppg) and senior guard Ally Lehman (17.2 ppg). Lehman is averaging a team-leading 10.8 rebounds per game, and also leads the team and is ninth in the nation in assists (7.1 apg). She has eight double-doubles this season, and is one of just two players in the nation with two triple-doubles this year to date. Woods has made a team-high 39 three-pointers, while Glenn has 6.3 rpg to rank second on the team. NIU has a total of five players scoring in double digits, with a sixth averaging 9.7 ppg. The Huskies are 5-0 at home, 3-3 on the road and 0-1 in neutral-site games this season. Head coach Lisa Carlsen welcomed back nine letterwinners, including four starters, from last year's team that went 11-19 overall and 4-14 in the MAC.
THE SERIES
The Falcons lead Northern Illinois, 24-13, in the all-time series between the teams, and BGSU won the most recent meeting. In the lone 2015-16 matchup, the Falcons ended the first half on a 21-0 run en route to a 58-43 win in DeKalb (Jan. 20, 2016). Two years ago, the Huskies posted a 67-50 win (Jan. 28, 2015) to snap a 13-game BGSU series winning streak. The last meeting at the Stroh Center saw the Brown and Orange pick up a 65-59 win (Jan. 14, 2015). BGSU is 14-5 in home games (including 3-0 at the Stroh), 9-8 on the road and 1-0 in neutral-site contests vs. Northern through the years. NIU's last win in Bowling Green was an epic, four-overtime affair nearly 13 years ago (Feb. 18, 2004), when the Huskies pulled out a 102-97 decision. Jennifer Roos is 4-1 against NIU as a collegiate head coach. That record does not include a 2012 win over the Huskies, when she was serving as interim head coach of the Falcons.
FALCONS VS. THE MAC
The Falcons continue to own the best record in MAC history, and will do so for the foreseeable future. Entering the NIU game, BGSU has an all-time record of 398-182 (.686) in MAC regular-season contests, for the most wins and highest winning percentage of all league institutions. And, BG leads the series with all 11 MAC foes, making the Falcons the only team in the league, obviously, with a winning series record against every other school. BG also has the most overall victories and highest overall winning pct. of any conference institution.
