October 28, 2017 | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country
OXFORD, Ohio – It was a historic day for Bowling Green State University's men's and women's cross country teams as they competed at the Mid-American Conference Championships Saturday, Oct. 28. The men finished third overall for their best finish since 1995 when the Falcons won it all. The women placed ninth overall backed by many new faces to the MAC Championships.
The Field
On a blistering cold day in Oxford, Ohio, with race time temperatures around 38 degrees, the Falcons soared past much of the competition. The men were up first, with their 8K race toeing off at 11 a.m. The women followed at noon with the 6K. The men finished third of nine behind Eastern Michigan and Miami (OH), whereas the women placed ninth of 12.
Men's 8K Event
After leading the pack through the first half, junior Noah Schaub placed third overall and first amongst the Falcons. His third place finish was the best for BGSU since Brad Schaser finished second back in 1995. Schaub's time of 24:35 is the fastest ever 8K time for the Falcons at the MAC Championships, breaking Chris Koehler's record of 24:53 which was set in 1982.
Women's 6K Event
Redshirt-junior Rachel Walny finished first for the Falcons, crossing the line sixth overall.
Quoting The Coach
"I'm proud of these guys. They fought every step of the way and never gave up," assistant coach Juan Carrillo said. "We executed our race plan how we planned an it paid off. I'm very impressed with they way they closed in the second half of the race."
"We competed the whole race and we made tremendous progress from last year's MAC 5th place finish," he added. "We have the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships in two weeks and we are looking to continue making progress. Today was a good day for BG's men's cross country and it's something to be excited for."
