Women's Golf Tees Off Spring Season at Match Play Challenge

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – To kick off the spring season, the Bowling Green women's golf program will host the Mid-American Match Play Challenge on Monday, Feb. 13 through Tuesday, Feb. 14 in Lakewood Ranch, Fla. The Falcons will host the fourth annual tournament at the Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club and will feature up to 72-holes of competition on the par-72, 6,068 yard course.
The two-day tournament will feature 12 teams competing in a seeded, match play format, with Lamar earning the top seed. In order of seeding, other teams participating will include Western Michigan (2), Akron (3), Eastern Michigan (4), Florida Gulf Coast (5), Northern Illinois (6), Oakland (7), Ohio (8), Bowling Green (9), Central Michigan (10), Dayton (11) and Fort Wayne (12).
The Falcons will send out a lineup led by sophomore Erin Fahey, followed by senior Fran Rodriguez, freshman Jessica Madry, junior Madelynn Swank, and sophomore Sarah Kern. The lineup for the tournament will stay the same through all matches, in which the order of play starts with the #5 player, followed by player #4, #3, #2 and #1.
Fahey led the Falcons in the fall season, finishing on the top of the Bowling Green lineup in three of the team's five events, clenching as high as a ninth-place finish in the fall campaign. Appearing in all five of the fall season's events was senior Rodriguez, who marked a low round of 75 at the KZoo Classic. Third in the lineup will be freshman Madry, competing in her fifth event of the 2016-17 season. In the fourth spot on the lineup is junior Swank, who appeared in four of the fall's five events, and carded a low round of 76. Rounding out the Falcons will be sophomore Kern, who saw action in three events this fall. Kern earned a low round of 74 at the Cardinal Classic in September.
In its fourth annual event in 2017, the Mid-American Match Play Challenge has had teams from the Mid-American Conference take home each of the last three titles. In 2014, the University of Toledo won, while Northern Illinois placed first in 2015. In last season's tournament, Kent State claimed the title by downing Northern Illinois 3-2 in the semifinals and Eastern Michigan 4-1 in the final round.
The top 4 seeds will have byes for the first round, while the four teams in the consolation bracket will include teams who compete in a round robin format. The tournament will kick off with the first round at 7:50 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 13 at holes #1 and #10, followed directly by the second round at approximately 12 p.m. The semifinals will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 14 with tee offs at holes #1 and #10 at 7:50 a.m. The final round will begin immediately following round three, at approximately 1 p.m.
