LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. – The Bowling Green women's golf team kicked off the spring season on Monday as it hosted the first two rounds of the Mid-American Match Play Challenge. The Falcons, seeded ninth based off of Golfstat rankings, split and went 1-1-0 through the first two rounds on the par 72, 6,068-yard King's Dunes course at the Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club.
"I was proud of our efforts in both matches today," Bowling Green women's golf head coach Stephanie Young said. "We didn't see the results we wanted this morning, but played many good holes. The team continued to work hard and we were able to get a victory this afternoon. I'm looking forward to competition tomorrow."
Bowling Green initially fell to No. 8 Ohio 5-0 in the first round, and went onto compete in the consolation bracket. The Falcons then rebounded to defeat No. 10 Central Michigan 3-2 with victories by sophomore Erin Fahey, senior Fran Rodriguez and sophomore Sarah Kern.
The Bobcats edged Bowling Green in tight matches in the morning, in which Rodriguez was able to battle until the final hole. The Flower Mound, Texas native narrowly fell by just one.
In the afternoon, Kern opened the bout up with a 4&2 win over Katie Logan at the No. 5 spot. The sophomore opened play with a win on hole No. 10, and continued to hold her lead through the first nine holes of competition. Kern, a Springboro, Ohio native, then consistently expanded her lead through the remaining seven holes before downing Logan after just 16 holes.
Kern was followed up by junior Madelynn Swank in the No. 4 spot, who was able to come back from a deficit early in the second round of competition. The Clarenden Hills, Ill. native rebounded to lead for eight consecutive holes, although the Chippewa's Bria Colosky came back in the final three holes to take the match by two.
Although the competition was tight through the first nine holes against Central Michigan's Natalie Johnson, freshman Jessica Madry narrowly fell by a 4&2 mark. Madry kept it an even playing field through the first two holes, and ultimately tied it up five times through the front nine. However, Johnson broke away and came out with the win with narrow wins through the second half of competition.
Senior Rodriguez marked one of just three eagles on the day en route to defeating CMU's Danielle Sawyer in the No. 2 spot by a 4&3 margin. The senior's point was critical and tied the Falcons back up with the Chippewa's. Rodriguez was consistent through her 15 holes of competition and led in its entirety, starting with the second hole of play.
Similarly, sophomore Fahey came out of the gate with a lead and did not let up, ultimately chalking up a 4&2 victory. Fahey tied her first hole with Central Michigan's Kristen Wolfe, but led the rest of the way through 16 holes. In the No. 1 spot, Fahey was able to break the 2-2 tie and seal the Falcons victory by a 3-2 final.
The second day of the 2017 Women's Mid-American Match Play Challenge is slated for a 7:50 a.m. start time tomorrow, Feb. 14. The Falcons will tee-off against the Dayton Flyers on hole No. 10 at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, and will look to secure the consolation bracket in the fourth round in the afternoon.
