Zips Come to the Stroh as Second Half of MAC Schedule Gets Underway

Falcons face Akron Saturday at 12:30 p.m., on Alumnae Day
The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team begins the second half of the Mid-American Conference schedule at home this weekend. Head coach Jennifer Roos and the Falcons host the University of Akron in Saturday (Feb. 4) action, with tipoff scheduled for 12:30 p.m. at the Stroh Center.

Sophomore Carly Santoro exploded for a career-high 32 points in the Falcons' game at Kent State on Saturday (Jan. 28). Santoro scored 22 of those points in the second half, including 14 in the fourth quarter alone, for the highest point total by a Falcon in nearly six years and the first 30-point outing in the Jennifer Roos head-coaching era.
A TRADITION OF SUCCESS
>> Bowling Green has won 14 MAC regular-season championships and 11 league tournament titles, the highest totals among all conference teams. Prior to the injury-plagued season of 2014-15, the Falcons had won at least 20 games in a MAC-record 11 consecutive seasons. BG won at least 24 games in nine-straight seasons during that span, losing just 18 total games in MAC regular-season play during those nine years.
>> The Falcons made 10 consecutive national postseason trips from 2005-14, with five NCAA Championships appearances and five trips to the WNIT during that time. The 2006-07 team was the most successful in MAC history, winning a league-record 31 games en route to an NCAA 'Sweet Sixteen' appearance.
>> Overall, BGSU has won 20 or more games 19 times, the highest total among all Mid-American Conference women's basketball-playing institutions.
SCOUTING AKRON
Akron is 9-11 on the season, and the Zips have a 2-7 record in MAC play. Akron downed Eastern Michigan on Saturday, but suffered a 90-63 home loss to Ball State Wednesday night. The Zips' MAC wins include a 29-point blowout win on the road at MAC-leading Northern Illinois, the Huskies' lone loss of the conference season. Akron is 3-6 at home, 6-4 on the road and 0-1 in neutral-site games this season. In MAC play, UA is 1-4 at home and 1-3 on the road. Senior guard Hannah Plybon leads the team in scoring, with 18.2 points per game, and has hit a UA-best 59 three-point field goals. Senior guard Alex Ricketts and sophomore guard Megan Sefcik have 11.0 and 9.2 ppg, respectively, while freshman guard Shaunay Edmonds has 7.2 ppg and leads UA in assists (3.6 apg) and steals (1.9 spg). Junior forward Greta Burry has 6.5 ppg and a team-leading 5.3 rebounds per game. Burry has 106 total boards to Plybon's 105. Head coach Jodi Kest and the Zips finished 19-14 overall and 11-7 in MAC play a year ago.
THE SERIES
The Falcons lead Akron, 52-7, in the all-time series between the teams, and BGSU won this year's first meeting to snap a UA four-game series winning streak. The Brown and Orange posted a 62-58 win in Akron last month (Jan. 7, 2017). Last year, UA posted a 71-55 win at the Stroh Center (Jan. 13, 2016) and a 71-61 victory in the regular-season finale' at Rhodes Arena (March 5, 2016). BG won the first 26 series meetings with the Zips, saw Akron capture two of the next five games, then won 19 more in a row before a UA win in January of 2013. BGSU is 27-2 in home games, 23-5 in road contests and 2-0 in neutral-site meetings with the Zips over the years. Jennifer Roos is 4-5 against Akron as a collegiate head coach.
UP NEXT
Following the Akron game, the Falcons will hit the road for the next two contests, beginning with a midweek matchup in Muncie. The Falcons will face Ball State on Wednesday night (Feb. 8) in a 7:00 p.m. start, then will head to the Glass City for a Saturday (Feb. 11) contest vs. arch-rival Toledo. That game will also begin at 7:00 p.m. BG's next home game is Wednesday, Feb. 15, vs. Western Michigan.
