February 23, 2017 | Women's Golf
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green women's golf program will continue spring action by competing in the Rio Verde Invitational hosted by Western Michigan from Feb. 24-26. The 15th annual Invitational will feature 54-holes of competition at the par 72, 6,215 yard Rio Verde Country Club on the White Wing Course.
The large 17-team field will feature Akron, Arkansas State, Ball State, Bowling Green, Bradley, Central Arkansas, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Missouri State, Northern Illinois, Northern Arizona, Ohio, Seton Hall, Little Rock, UMKC, host-school Western Michigan, Wichita State and Xavier.
The Bowling Green lineup will consist of sophomore Erin Fahey, senior Fran Rodriguez, freshman Jessica Madry, junior Madelynn Swank and sophomore Sarah Kern.
Fahey led the Falcons in the fall season, finishing on the top of the Bowling Green lineup in three of the team's five events, clenching as high as a ninth-place finish in the fall campaign. Last week at the Mid-American Match Play Challenge, Fahey went 1-1-1 through the Falcons three rounds of action. A native of Austin, Texas, Fahey bounced back from a first round loss to win in the second round, and tie in the third.
Appearing in all six events thus far in the season is senior Rodriguez, who marked a low round of 75 at the KZoo Classic. In the Match Play Challenge, Rodriguez also rebounded from a first round loss by marking back-to-back wins in the next two rounds. The Flower Mound, Texas native's point in the third round sealed the Falcons victory over Dayton and helped her go 2-1 through the tournament.
Third in the lineup will be freshman Madry, competing in her sixth event of the 2016-17 season. After earning a win the second round of the Match Play Challenge, the Houston, Texas native carried her momentum to the third round of competition and followed up with another point for the Falcons.
In the fourth spot on the lineup is junior Swank, who appeared in four of the fall's five events, and carded a low round of 76. In Lakewood Ranch, Fla. for the Match Play Challenge, Dayton started out with a lead in the third round, but Swank was able to cut the deficit heading into the back nine. A native of Claredon Hills, Ill., Swank was able to narrow the Flyer's lead, but ultimately fell in a close 4&2 final.
Rounding out the Falcons will be sophomore Kern, who saw action in three events this fall. Kern earned a low round of 74 at the Cardinal Classic in September, and was able to open the spring season 2-1 at the Match Play Challenge by earning wins against both Central Michigan and Dayton.
Also special to this year's Rio Verde Invitational, the residents of the Rio Verde Country Club have opened their homes to house the golfers, coaches and team staff for the course of the tournament.
It will be Bowling Green's fifth consecutive appearance at the Invitational and 10th overall, where the team has finished as high as fifth in 2013. Last year, the Falcons finished in a tie for 12th overall with rounds of 310, 301, and 303 for a total team score of 914, +50. Individually, Erin Fahey led the tournament field on par 3 scoring by shooting an even 3.00 average.
