Oxford, OH – the 2017 MAC Championships have come to an end with your BGSU Falcons earning a 6th place finish in the conference.
The last session of the championships started off with the 3-meter diving event. Sophomore, Claire Stam competed for the Falcons in the consolation final, placing 13th in the event with a 268.65 final score. Freshman, Talisa Lemke represented the program in the championships final, placing 4th with a 28.25 final score. Lemke was awarded with the Freshman Diver of the Year Award and was also recognized as a Second MAC Team diver for the season.
The swimming events started with junior, Natalie Criswell representing the Falcons in the championship final of he 1650 freestyle. Criswell, who was already the school record holder in the event, broke her own school record with a final time of 16:31.89 to place 3rd in the conference. This new school record is almost 20 seconds faster than the previous one. Also within her record breaking performance, the junior broke the 1000 freestyle school record. Criswell was already the school record holder in the event. The Falcon recorded a 10:30.17 time at the 1000 mark of her 1650 freestyle event to break the record.
Sophomore, Mary Edeards swam in heat one of the timed finals of the 1650 freestyle. The Falcon recorded a 17:19.48 final time to squeeze into a top 16 finish for BGSU. New transfer for the orange and brown, Caroline Neely also swam in heat one of the event, recording a 17:39.98 to place 19th for the Falcons. Neely was closely followed by senior, Hannah Albion, who recorded a 17:58.51 to place 20th in the event.
Next event was the 200 backstroke, in which junior, Elodie Schreiber represented the Falcons in the championship finals. Schreiber stopped the clock at 1:59.83 to place 8th in the event. Senior, Maya Skorupski swam in the consolation finals, recording a time of 2:03.17 to place 7th in the heat and 15th in the event. Senior, Victoria Griffin swam in the championship finals of the 100 freestyle. Griffin placed 5th in the event with a 49.95 final time.
Senior, Kristin Filby represented the BGSU program in the consolation final of the 200 breaststroke. Filby placed 2nd in the heat and 10th in the event with a time of 2:16.44. Sophomore, Emily Verbrugge also swam in the consolation final of the 200 breaststroke. The Falcons touched the wall at 2:21.02 to finish 8th in the heat and 16th in the event. The last individual event of the championships was the 200 butterfly. However, the Falcons were not in the final heats of the event.
The last event of the Mid-American Conference 2016-17 season was the 400 freestyle relay. Amanda Washko started the relay for the Falcons, recording a 51.68 split. Megan Larson followed Washko and recorded a 50.66 split. Maria Galic was next in the line-up, recording a split of 50.66. Anchoring the relay was Hannah Paris. The freshman had a 51.02 split, and stopped the clock at 3:24.02 for the Falcons.
The Bowling Green State University swimming and diving program finished in sixth place at the 2017 Mid-American Conference Championships with a final score of 294 points. The Akron Zips won the MAC title for the fourth year in a row with a final score of 750 points.
The 2017 Mid-American Conference championships are now finished, putting an end to the 2016-17 swimming season for the Falcons. However, divers Claire Stam and Talisa Lemke will be representing the program at the 2017 NCAA Zones later on. Along with the end of a swimming season, comes the end of five student-athletes' swimming and collegiate sports careers. Senior Falcons Maya Skorupski, Anna Babinec, Victoria Griffin, Hannah Albion and Kristin Filby have successfully completed four years of collegiate swimming for BGSU. Thank you for the last four years. Once a Falcon, always a Falcon.
