OPENING TIP
• Bowling Green and Buffalo will meet for just the 34th time on the hardwood on Saturday. Bowling Green holds an 18-15 advantage in the all-time series. • Buffalo has won five-consecutive games over Bowling Green. The Falcons last won on Feb. 2, 2014. The Falcons beat the Bulls in the Stroh Center that day, 74-68.Â
• The Falcons are 9-5 in 2016-17 at the Stroh Center, and have won two-straight at home. If BG were to win its final three home games, it would tie the Stroh Center record for wins in a season with 12. Buffalo is 5-8 on the year on the road.Â
• Bowling Green is coming off a pair of improbable overtime wins, marking the first time that BGSU has won consecutive games in overtime since the 1934-35 season. The Falcons beat Toledo in double overtime on Feb. 4, before beating Kent State on the road on Feb. 7 on a Demajeo Wiggins tip-in with 1.3 seconds to go.Â
• With seven games left, BG has equaled its MAC win total from Michael Huger's first season.
HUGER'S THOUGHTS ON BUFFALO
"I am very proud of our increased effort and intensity the past few games. We will look to keep that going against Buffalo this Saturday. Buffalo won the MAC Tournament last season, and they are playing as well as anyone in the league currently. They are tough to guard and have multiple weapons on offense. It will be a fight from start to finish, and the toughest team will likely win. Our guys are excited to get back in front of our home crowd and students."
SCOUTING THE BUFFALO BULLS
Buffalo enters Saturday afternoon's game on a three-game winning streak. The Bulls have won those three games in dominating fashion, as UB beat Northern Illinois by 20, Ball State by 27, and Central Michigan by 10. The Bulls are 12-12 overall, and 6-5 in Mid-American Conference play. Prior to its three-game winning streak, Buffalo lost a pair of one-point games at Akron and Miami, with double-digit wins over Western Michigan and Kent State before that. Senior Blake Hamilton, who plays on the wing, leads Buffalo with 16.8 points and 4.4 assists per ballgame. He also is second on the team in rebounding, as he averaging 6.4 per contest. Buffalo has three other players averaging over 12.0 points – sophomore C.J. Massinburg (14.0), sophomore Nick Perkins (13.9), and senior Willie Conner (12.9). No other player on the roster averages more than 6.0 points. A strong rebounding team, the Bulls are averaging 40.9 as a team, and own a plus-4.7 rebounding margin. The Bulls average nearly 15.0 turnovers, but average a strong 15.3 assists. UB scores 77.0 points per game, while allowing 73.7 points. The Bulls shoot 44.6 percent from the floor, and 32.0 percent from downtown, while its opponents have averages of 41.1 percent and 33.5 percent, respectively. Second-year head coach Nate Oats led Buffalo to a MAC Tournament title in his first year. He's 32-27 at UB.Â
A BGSU WIN WOULD…
• Improve BGSU's overall record to 12-13
• Move Bowling Green back to .500 in the MAC at 6-6
• Put BG on a four-game MAC winning streak for the first time since February of 2015
• Give BGSU its first win over Buffalo since Feb. 2, 2014
• Snap Buffalo's five-game winning streak over Bowling Green
• Improve the Falcons record in February in 2016-17 to 3-0
• Give Bowling Green its third-consecutive win at home
• Move BGSU to 10-5 at home in 2016-17
• Increase BG's lead in the all-time series to 19-15
TWO-STRAIGHT WILD WINS FOR THE FALCONS
It's nearly impossible to track, or say for certain, but there's little doubt that the Falcons' last two games have been two of the craziest, most-unbelievable games in the history of Bowling Green men's basketball. After beating arch-rival Toledo (Feb. 4) in double overtime, 104-100, the Falcons knocked off Kent State (Feb. 7) in overtime by a score of 84-83. The two games marked the first time that BGSU has played consecutive overtime games since the 1934-35 season. By winning both games, Bowling Green has won two MAC games in overtime for the first time since 1996-97. In both contests, Bowling Green trailed by at least three points with less than 10 seconds left in an overtime period. The Orange and Brown trailed by at least five points in both overtimes against Toledo, and were down by four points with less than 10 seconds left in the single overtime at Kent State. Both games were tied, 75-75, after regulation.Â
MAC STANDINGS SHOW BGSU IS BACK IN THE RACE
Bowling Green faced Miami on Jan. 31 at the Stroh Center. With a loss, Bowling Green would fall to dead last in the conference. Instead, the Falcons won the contest by 11 points, and haven't looked back since. BGSU is riding a three-game MAC winning streak for the first time since February of 2015. The Falcons are just one game back of a tie for second place. Outside of Akron, which is 10-1, each team in the league has at least five conference losses. Four teams sit at 6-5, while four more teams sit at 5-6. Western Michigan is 4-7, and Miami is 2-9. For the fourth-consecutive game, BGSU is set to play a team that is either tied, or one game ahead of the Falcons. Both Miami and BG owned 2-6 records on Jan. 31. When the Falcons played Toledo, BGSU was 3-6 and UT was 4-5. When Bowling Green entered Tuesday (Feb. 7) night's game at Kent State with a 4-6 mark, Kent State was just one game ahead at 5-5. With a win on Saturday (Feb. 11), both Bowling Green and Buffalo would sit at 6-6. More so than any other year in recent memory, the MAC is completely wide open. Even 11th-seeded Western Michigan is just two games back of a tie for second place.Â
FALCONS CAN SET THE STROH'S SINGLE-SEASON RECORD FOR WINS
Bowling Green is having one of the best home seasons at the Stroh Center in program history. The Falcons improved to 9-5 at the Stroh Center in 2016-17 with two home wins last week over rivals Miami (Jan. 31) and Toledo (Feb. 4). Bowling Green's win over Miami gave the Falcons their most wins at home in the Michael Huger era, as BGSU went 7-8 at the Stroh in 2015-16. The Orange and Brown are 16-13 at home under Huger, and with three more home games remaining, Bowling Green can tie the program record for most wins at the Stroh Center by winning out. In the facility's inaugural season, BG went 12-4. If Bowling Green goes 2-1 at home to close out the season, it will finish with 11 wins, which will match the totals from the 2012-13 and 2014-15 seasons. There's also a possibility that the Falcons could play an additional home game in the first round of the MAC Tournament. Earlier in the season, the Falcons registered their 50th win at the Stroh Center by knocking off Morgan State on Nov. 26. The Falcons are 57-36 at home since the facility opened in 2011. Bowling Green owns an all-time winning percentage of .613 at the Stroh Center.Â
BGSU STUNS KENT STATE, MAKES SPORTSCENTER APPEARANCE IN THE PROCESS
Even though victory appeared impossible near the end, Bowling Green won its second-straight game in overtime in thrilling fashion on Tuesday (Feb. 7) night at Kent State. The crazy ending of the game was shown on that night's edition of SportsCenter. Junior Matt Fox tied his career high with 18 points to lead the Falcons. He made a season-high five three-pointers (5-for-7). Freshman Rodrick Caldwell hit a career-high four triples (4-for-6), and ended the contest with 16 points and four rebounds. Fellow freshman Dylan Frye posted 11 points and four rebounds, while sophomore Demajeo Wiggins added 16 points and eight boards.
After a back-and-forth, up-and-down second half, the Falcons trailed the Golden Flashes by four points with less than 10 seconds left in overtime. Caldwell flew up the court after a KSU layup, and hit a deep pull-up triple with 7.2 seconds left to pull BGSU within one point at 83-82. Sophomore Antwon Lillard then forced a turnover on Kent State's inbounds pass, giving BGSU the ball back with 6.4 seconds to go.Â
With no timeouts left, the Falcons turned to Caldwell, who drove the lane, and fired up a difficult shot. It didn't draw rim, but Wiggins plucked it out of the air, and tipped the basketball in, giving BGSU an 84-83 lead, with 1.3 seconds left in overtime. BGSU closed out the game by not allowing a Kent State shot attempt.Â
DOUBLE-OT CLASSIC: BOWLING GREEN BEATS TOLEDO IN THRILLER
In what was most likely the greatest men's basketball game ever played between Bowling Green and Toledo, the Falcons snapped a six-game losing streak to the Rockets by winning, 104-100, in double overtime on Feb. 4 at the Stroh Center. Zack Denny scored a career-high 30 points, while fellow senior Wes Alcegaire poured in 22.Â
Toledo appeared to have the game wrapped up after Jonathan Williams hit three free throws to give the Rockets an 87-80 lead with just 1:48 to go in the first overtime. However, Zack Denny capped a 9-2 run by hitting a three-pointer from the right wing to tie the score at 89-89 with six seconds left.
With the Falcons down by three in the second overtime, Denny tied the score at 99-99 with just 1:18 to go with a three-pointer. Denny gave BG a 102-100 lead with 28 seconds left after another cold-blooded three-ball. Denny's pressure forced a UT back-court violation on its ensuing possession. The senior went on to hit two game-sealing free throws for his 29th and 30th points of the game.
HUGER'S LINEUP CHANGES CHANGE BOWLING GREEN'S SEASON
After the season opener, Bowling Green played with the same starting five for the next 17 games of the season. Michael Huger then inserted freshman Dylan Frye into the starting lineup, before making even more significant changes for the Ohio (Jan. 28) game. Freshman Rodrick Caldwell entered the starting five, as did sophomore Malik Hluchoweckyj, who had never started a game in his career. In fact, he played 29 minutes versus the Bobcats, which nearly doubled his total minutes for the entire season up until that point. Caldwell and Hluchoweckyj joined Frye, senior Wes Alcegaire and sophomore Demajeo Wiggins. Alcegaire and Wiggins have started each of BGSU's 24 games. The Falcons have posted a 3-1 record after the most-recent lineup changes. Across that span, the Falcons have gone from tied for the last in the league, to a game out of a tie for second place.Â
BGSU'S THREE-POINT SHOOTING ACORSS THE THREE-GAME WINNING STREAK
Bowling Green's three-point shooting has played a huge role in its three-game winning streak. Bowling Green is shooting an insane 47.6 percent (30-of-63) over the last three games, which is 12.8 percent above its average on the season. In the wins over Miami (Jan. 31) and Kent State (Feb. 7), the Falcons set a season high for three-point field goals, as BGSU made 10 triples versus the RedHawks and 11 three-pointers at Kent State. In the Orange and Brown's win over Toledo (Feb. 7), the Falcons shot a season-high 75.0 percent from three-point range by converting on 9-of-12 attempts. BG has had a number of incredible individual performances in the wins, as well. Zack Denny went 5-for-5 from downtown in the win over Toledo, while Wes Alcegaire went 6-for-9 versus Miami. In the victory over Kent State, Matt Fox went 5-for-7, and Rodrick Caldwell went 4-for-6.Â
THE FALCONS ARE FINDING A WAY TO WIN
Across Bowling Green's three-game winning streak, the Falcons are simply finding a way to win. In BGSU's win over Miami, the Falcons won despite Miami shooting 56.5 percent. When an opponent shoots over 50.0 percent, the Falcons are just 4-15 in the Michael Huger era. Against Toledo, Bowling Green trailed with five minutes remaining and two minutes remaining. In those types of situations, BGSU is 4-26 and 4-29, respectively, under Huger. Kent State had a better field-goal percentage than Bowling Green last time out, yet the Falcons still won. When a team has a higher shooting percentage than the Falcons, BG is 5-26 across Huger's two years at the helm of the program. Furthermore, in the games against Toledo and Kent State, Bowling Green trailed by at least four points in all three overtimes. BG was also down by at least three points with less than 10 seconds left in an overtime a total of two times.Â
FALCONS SHOOT LIGHTS OUT IN 2-0 WEEK
Bowling Green's combined 187 points last week were the most combined points in two-straight MAC games since the 1996-97 season. BGSU scored 99 points and 94 points in consecutive wins over Central Michigan and Toledo in March of 1997. Last week, in wins over rivals Miami (Jan. 31) and Toledo (Feb. 4), the Orange and Brown scored 83 points and 104 points, respectively. BGSU shot extremely well in both victories. In the win over the RedHawks, the Falcons made a then season-high 10 three-pointers on 23 attempts to win by a score of 83-72. BGSU also shot 74.2 percent from the free throw line by converting on 23-of-31 attempts from the charity stripe. In the game against Toledo, the Orange and Brown outscored one of the top offensive teams in the conference in an epic double-overtime win versus the Rockets. Bowling Green won, 104-100, marking the first time that the program had scored 100-plus points since Nov. 9, 2013. The Falcons shot a season-high 58.7 percent (37-of-63) from the field, and a season-high 75.0 percent (9-of-12) from behind the long line. Bowling Green also made 21 free throws in the win.
ROD RUNNING THE SHOW AT THE POINT
Freshman Rodrick Caldwell has started at point guard in each of the last four games for the Orange and Brown. Caldwell, who has led the Falcons to a 3-1 mark over the current four-game stretch, turned in one of the best performances of his career on Tuesday (Feb. 7) night at Kent State. The freshman from Dayton finished the game with 16 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals. He went 5-for-10 from the floor, and 4-for-6 from downtown. His four three-balls established a career high. Caldwell made a few clutch plays down the stretch, as well. He hit basically a do-or-die triple with 7.2 seconds left in overtime to bring the Falcons within a single point. If he misses, the game is likely over. It was then Caldwell who drove to the basket, and fired up a shot, which allowed sophomore Demajeo Wiggins to tip it in with 1.3 seconds left for the win. Caldwell, a three-star prospect coming out of Wayne High School, has now scored in double figures six times this season, with three of those games coming over BGSU's last five contests. In 17.6 minutes per game, Caldwell is averaging 6.6 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.8 assists. He's shooting 35.3 percent from the floor, and 35.4 percent from three-point range.Â
FOX CATCHES FIRE FROM DOWNTOWN IN WIN OVER KENT STATE
Junior Matt Fox went bananas from behind the long line in Bowling Green's 84-83 win in overtime at Kent State on Tuesday (Feb. 7) night. Fox hit his first three triples of the game, and went on to tie his career high with 18 points. For the game, he went 5-for7 from deep. His five three-balls tied his career high, while breaking his season high. In the second half, he hit an and-one triple, and completed the four-point play by draining the free throw. He got fouled on another three-point attempt, and hit 2-of-3 from the charity stripe. The product of Anthony Wayne High School has now played multiple three-pointers in seven games in 2016-17, and his 40.6 three-point percentage ranks 11th in the conference. Fox is averaging a career-high 4.7 points and 1.7 rebounds this season, while playing a career-high 16.1 minutes per contest.Â
WIGGINS VS. THE MAC'S TOP BIG MEN
Sophomore Demajeo Wiggins is having a tremendous season. His development from his freshman to sophomore season passes the eye test. That stats back it up, as well. After averaging 4.6 points and 4.4 rebounds last year, he's up to 11.0 points and 8.3 rebounds in 2016-17. What's been even more encouraging is the fact that he's played great basketball against the big men commonly believed to be the best in the league. In the Falcons' last game against Kent State, while being matched up with First Team All-MAC selection Jimmy Hall, Wiggins went 7-for-10 from the floor and registered 16 points and eight rebounds. In two games against Toledo's Steve Taylor, who ranks first in the league in rebounding and ninth in scoring, Wiggins averaged 16.5 points and 9.5 rebounds, while shooting 73.7 percent (14-of-19). The sophomore scored a career-high 21 points on a career-high 10 made field goals against Akron's Isaiah Johnson -- another First Team All-MAC selection. In two wins over Ball State, Wiggins averaged 15.5 points and 11.0 rebounds while playing against Trey Moses, who ranks fourth in the league in rebounding. In those two games against the Cardinals, Wiggins shot 60.0 percent (12-of-20).Â
DEMAJEO'S DOUBLE-DOUBLES AND CONFERENCE DOMINANCE
Sophomore forward Demajeo Wiggins is averaging 12.9 points and a team-high 9.3 rebounds through 11 conference games in 2016-17. Wiggins has recorded six double-doubles on the season – three of which have been posted in MAC games. To put Wiggins' six double-doubles into perspective, in 2015-16, he had just four double-digit scoring nights, and one game with 10-plus rebounds. Wiggins is shooting a team-high 56.4 percent in conference play, and a team-high 50.3 percent on the season. He ranks third in the league in offensive rebounds per game (3.1), and eighth in defensive rebounds (5.2). His 8.3 rebounds per game ranks fifth in the league. He also sits 11th in the conference in field goal percentage, and 30th in scoring. Below is a breakdown of Wiggins' six double-doubles in 2016-17.
Â
HLUCHOWECKYJ'S MOVE TO THE STARTING FIVE
Malik Hluchoweckyj has started each of Bowling Green's last four games, with the Falcons racking up a 3-1 record since he was inserted into the starting lineup. In the first start of his career versus Ohio (Jan. 28), he played a career-high 29 minutes, and recorded nine points and nine assists. In the team's following game against Miami (Jan. 31), Hluchoweckyj scored a career-high 10 points in a winning effort. In the Orange and Brown's victory over Toledo (Feb. 4), Hluchoweckyj made an impact in a variety of ways, as he had two points, two assists, two rebounds and two steals. His two steals and two assists tied career highs. Hluchoweckyj made two three-pointers in each of his first two starts, as he went 2-for-5 versus Ohio and a perfect 2-for-2 in the Miami win.
ZACK DENNY IS MR. CLUTCH
Senior Zack Denny turned in one of the most impressive clutch performances in BGSU men's basketball history on Feb. 4 versus Toledo. Denny hit three triples in the overtime sessions that either tied the game, or gave Bowling Green the lead. He also made all four of his free throws in the second overtime. Denny sent the game into double OT with a three-ball with six seconds left. He then tied the game at 99-99 with 1:18 remaining in the final overtime, before winning the Falcons the game by hitting another three-pointer with 28 seconds left. His last triple gave the Orange and Brown a 102-100 lead. He then forced a turnover, and hit two game-sealing free throws. Denny's performance against Toledo was no fluke, however. Clutch situations, for this exercise, are defined as shots taken in the final five minutes of regulation or overtime with the score in single digits at the time of the shot. In those situations this season, Denny has been unconscious. He's 7-for-16 from the field, 5-for-7 from three-point range, and a ridiculous 14-of-14 at the free throw line.Â
AN ALL-TIME GREAT WEEK FOR ALCEGAIRE
While playing against BGSU's biggest historic rivals in Miami (Jan. 31) and Toledo (Feb. 4), senior Wes Alcegaire turned in the best week of his career last week. The Miami, Florida native averaged 23.5 points and 3.0 rebounds. In Bowling Green's 2-0 week, he combined to shoot 17-for-26 (65.4 percent) from the floor, and a lethal 8-for-11 (72.7 percent) from three-point range. In Bowling Green's win over Miami, Alcegaire scored a career-high 25 points on 9-of-15 shooting. He made a career-high six three-pointers, and started off his performance with a 20-point first half. Against Toledo, he scored six-straight points in the first overtime with BG staring defeat right in the eyes. He went on to finish with 22 points on 8-of-11 shooting. He also went 2-for-2 from downtown. His two career outings came after a 2-for-14 shooting night versus Ohio. However, despite the off game against Ohio, Alcegaire appears to have rediscovered his shooting stroke, as he's scored in double figures in five of Bowling Green's last seven games. The senior, who leads the team in total field goals (110) and three-point field goals (38), is averaging a career-high 12.3 points, which ranks second on the team. Alcegaire is also averaging 3.3 rebounds, and 1.4 assists. He has 34 assists in 2016-17, which is 13 more than he had all of last season.Â
ALI'S ASSIST NUMBERS WHEN SCORING IN DOUBLE FIGURES
Ismail Ali, a native of South Hayward, California, is scoring at an improved rate in 2016-17. Ali is up to 6.7 points per game this season. Last year, he averaged 5.4 points. In 2015-16, Ali scored in double figures a total of five times. This year, he's already reached double digits eight times, and in seven of those eight games, he's also added at least five assists. The one game he didn't, which was in Bowling Green's home win over Ball State (Jan. 21), he had five rebounds. In the win over Toledo (Feb. 4), Ali had seven assists and just one turnover. He assisted all three of Zack Denny's clutch three-pointers in overtime. Ali's 4.6 assists per game average ranks fifth in the conference, while his 2.1 assist-to-turnover ratio is tops in the league. The senior's rebounding numbers are also up from a season ago, as he's averaging 2.4 boards per contest after averaging 2.1 rebounds in 2015-16. Â
DENNY MOVES INTO SEVENTH PLACE ON PROGRAM'S THREE-POINT LIST
Senior guard Zack Denny moved from 10th place to seventh place on the program's three-point field goals list by converting on all five of his three-point attempts in Bowling Green's epic win over Toledo on Feb. 4. It was a huge shooting night for Denny, who has been having an uncharacteristic year shooting the three-ball. His hot night improved his three-point percentage from 27.4 percent to 31.5 percent. Denny's five triples allowed him to surpass Joe Jakubowski (2007-11), Brian Moten (2005-09) and DeMar Moore (1995-99). Denny will need 17 more triples to move past Scott Thomas (2008-12). For his career, Denny is shooting 36.5 percent from deep.Â
DOUBLE-DIGIT SCORING NIGHTS HAVE DENNY NEARING 1,000 CAREER POINTS
Zack Denny posted his 50th game with 10-plus points last Saturday (Feb. 4) versus Toledo, and he did so in style, as he registered a career-high 30 points on 8-of-11 shooting. He also went 5-for-5 from downtown. He has now scored 10-plus points a total of 18 times in 2016-17, which is the most on the team. The Germantown, Ohio native is now just 31 points shy of becoming the 44th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points. Denny has increased his scoring output in each of his four seasons as a Falcon. He's averaging a career- and team-high 13.0 points in 2016-17 after scoring 10.6 points as a junior, 9.2 points as a sophomore, and 3.3 points as a freshman. Along with fellow senior Wes Alcegaire and sophomore Demajeo Wiggins, Denny is one of three Falcons averaging double digits this season. The senior is averaging a team-high 13.7 points within the conference. He also averaging 5.4 rebounds in MAC play, which ranks second on the squad.
FRYE JOINS ELITE CLASS OF FALCON FRESHMEN FOLLOWING 24-POINT OUTING
Dylan Frye's career-high 24 points versus Ohio (Jan. 28) were the most from a Falcon freshman since sophomore Antwon Lillard scored 26 points against Central Michigan at last year's MAC Tournament. Prior to Lillard's 26-point outburst, the last Falcon freshman to score at least 24 points was Chris Knight. He dropped 24 points on Cincinnati during the 2007-08 season. Including Frye, only six freshmen at Bowling Green have scored 24 points in a game over the past 14 seasons. Josh Almanson totaled 25 points versus Wilmington during the 2000-01 season. Hall of Famer Keith McLeod scored 29 points his freshman year in 1998-99 against Urbana. Ron Lewis scored 30 points versus Central Michigan on March 13, 2003, which stands as the most points scored by a freshman in the Orange and Brown over the last 14 seasons. Frye made three triples against Ohio, and went 9-for-17 from the field. His nine made field goals marked a new career high. Frye, who posted 11 points and four rebounds last time out at Kent State (Feb. 7) is averaging 8.0 points per game, and his minutes continue to rise, as he's now playing 22.0 minutes a night. He's shooting 43.5 percent from the field, and he's recorded a season-high six rebounds in two of the last four games. Frye is averaging 2.0 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 2016-17. His 38.9 three-point percentage ranks 14th in the conference.Â
WIGGINS RECORDS A HISTORIC 22 REBOUNDS AT CENTRAL MICHIGAN
In Bowling Green's 82-76 loss at Central Michigan on Jan. 24, sophomore Demajeo Wiggins registered 22 rebounds – the most from a Falcon in 43 years. Cornelius Cash, who was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 1975 NBA Draft, pulled down 22 rebounds in a 1974 game versus San Diego State. Wiggins notched seven offensive rebounds, and 15 defensive rebounds in the contest. The sophomore's effort played a huge part in the Falcons' racking up a season-high 49 rebounds. Prior to the game, it had been over two years since a Falcon even had 15 rebounds in a game. Richaun Holmes, who currently plays for the Philadelphia 76ers, pulled down 18 rebounds against Detroit Mercy on Nov. 30, 2014. Nate Thurmond and Al Dixon hold the single-game program record with 31 rebounds.Â
BREAKING DOWN THE SEVEN FINAL-MINUTE LOSSES
In BGSU's last road loss at Central Michigan, the Falcons dropped a hardly-fought and tightly-contested game for the seventh time in 2016-17. Bowling Green has now lost seven games by single digits, three games by one possession, three games by two possessions, including two games on a shot with less than three seconds left. Prior to the Eastern Michigan (Jan. 10) game, Bowling Green had lost its last three games by a combined nine points.
BGSU RANKS 51ST IN THE NATION IN TURNOVER MARGIN
Bowling Green ranks 51st in the country with a plus-2.1 turnover margin. Turnover margin is a statistic that takes into account a team's own turnovers, and the turnovers that they force their opponents into. In Bowling Green's win over Miami (Jan. 31), the Falcons forced 24 RedHawk turnovers, and cashed in by scoring 17 points off those turnovers. In Bowling Green's two games prior to the Miami contest, BG did an incredible job of taking care of the basketball, as the Falcons committed seven turnovers versus Ohio (Jan. 28), and just five turnovers at Central Michigan (Jan. 24). Bowling Green has continued to turn over its opponents in its two most-recent games. Last time out at Kent State (Feb. 7), the Falcons turned 19 turnovers into 21 points. In the win over Toledo (Feb. 4), Bowling Green turned 17 UT turnovers into 21 points. The Falcons are averaging 6.9 steals per game, which ranks fourth in the MAC and 101st in the country.Â
THE FIRST 20 MINUTES
Playing a strong first half has been crucial to the Falcons' success under head coach Michael Huger. In 2016-17, Bowling Green is 8-1 when leading at the half, and 3-12 when trailing at the half. Since the beginning of the Michael Huger era in 2015-16, the Falcons are 18-4 after taking a halftime lead, but just 9-26 when heading into the intermission with a deficit.
YEAR TWO OF THE MICHAEL HUGER ERA
Michael Huger has begun his second season at the helm of his alma mater. Huger has brought some needed stability to the program, as the 2016-17 season marks the first time that the Falcons will have a head coach in consecutive seasons since 2013-14. BG defeated both Kent State and Central Michigan to advance to the semifinals for the first time since 2009.Â
