STARTING STRONG AGAIN?
A year ago, Bowling Green opened the outdoor season at the Raleigh Relays and hit four Mid-American Conference automatic qualifying marks immediately. Makenzie Wheat and Aliyah Gustafson both did so in the shot put, while Kayla Velasquez added an auto mark in the hammer throw. As well, Raven Porter qualified in the high jump. This weekend, all four of those student-athletes will compete in the same events again.
IN THEIR OWN WORDS
"This meet is one of the biggest and best in the country this weekend. From a competitive standpoint, it's a great opportunity. We should walk away from the weekend feeling pretty good about what we did." – Lou Snelling, Head Coach
INDOOR TRACK BUILDING MOMENTUM
BGSU completed the indoor track and field season in late February by placing fourth at the MAC Indoor Track and Field Championships. The finish was the team's best result since 1999. That came on the heels of the squad's third place finish at the MAC Cross Country Championships in the fall. A year ago, Bowling Green placed sixth at the MAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships and will look to use the momentum from the fall and winter to improve upon that result.
WORKING FOR REGIONALS RETURN
A year ago, three Falcons advanced to the NCAA East Region Preliminary Round and all three return. Aliyah Gustafson, who advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships, qualified in the shot put, as did Makenzie Wheat. Kayla Velasquez also competed at regionals in the hammer throw. Wheat, in fact, has advanced to the East Region preliminary round in each of her first three years of competition. In total, BGSU has competed 16 times at regionals in head coach Lou Snelling's five seasons at the helm.
GUSTAFSON LOOKS TO REPEAT MAGICAL 2016
Aliyah Gustafson returned from a torn ACL to have a magical 2016 outdoor season. She won the MAC shot put championship and advanced to the NCAA East Region Preliminary Round as the No. 19 seed at the event. She stunned the field by finishing 12th and earning the final spot to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships, where she finished 24th and was named honorable mention All-American. BGSU has sent a competitor to the outdoor national championships in each of the past four seasons, with Brooke Pleger doing so in the hammer throw three consecutive seasons, ending third in both 2014 and 2015.
