Rachel Walny Breaks 31-Year Standing School Record In 10,000 At Mt. SAC Relays
April 14, 2017 | Women's Track and Field
Torrance, Calif. – Redshirt sophomore Rachel Walny broke the school record late Thursday night in the 10,000 and redshirt junior Rebecca Schott moved into fourth all-time in school history in the event. The duo competed in the 10,000 at the 59th annual Mt. SAC Relays, one of the biggest track and field events of the year.
Walny's time of 34:02.57 was more than a full minute faster than her collegiate personal best, which she set a year ago in placing third at the Mid-American Conference Championships. It broke the 10,000-meter school record, which had stood for 31 years since Sara Collas ran 34:17.9 at the Florida Relays on March 28, 1986.
Walny, in fact, placed seventh in the elite invitational division of the 10,000 Thursday evening amidst a field of 46 finishers. Only four of the six who finished in front of her are active collegiate runners and she defeated runners from schools such as BYU, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Purdue, along with MAC competitors from Miami (Ohio) and Central Michigan. Her time is the second-fastest in the MAC this year and is a virtual lock to qualify her for the NCAA East Region Preliminary Round. She would be the first Falcon to compete in an NCAA postseason race in the 10,000 since Cheri Triner in 1993.
Redshirt junior Schott also posted an impressive performance, completing the 10,000 in 35:00.36 to place fourth in the Open A race. Her time is fourth in BGSU history (behind only Walny, Collas and Triner) and will put her in contention for an NCAA East Region Preliminary Round spot. Schott's previous PR time of 35:57.12 also came at last year's MAC Championships, when she earned a spot on the podium with a seventh-place finish. Schott's time is the fourth-fastest in the MAC this year.
The remainder of Bowling Green's team will take part in the All-Ohio Championships, hosted by Cincinnati, this weekend. Competition gets under way with the heptathlon today at 12:30 pm. The Falcons also compete in the long jump, hammer throw and steeplechase today before a full day of events Saturday.
